yes it will be louder. i went through a couple of setups.
-catless dp, 2nd cat, resonator and muffler- sounds stock, little burble, no drone
-catless dp, no 2nd cat, resonator, muffler- sounded a little deeper, more burble, no drone
-catless dp, 2nd cat, no resonator, muffler- sounded louder, drone in 5th and 6th, lots of pop
personally i went back to the first set up, i like the 2nd setup but theres too much sh*t coming out of the exhaust and i was tired of it making the back trunk all dirty/gritty

Get the exhaust shop to remove the resonator, weld some flanges on, and make a flanged straight pipe replacement, so you can alternate.

If you remove your resonator you might as well remove your 2nd cat unless your live in a CARB state.

Removing any emissions control device (ie 2nd cat) is illegal in any CARB state (and ignored violation of site guidelines ) and should fail visual inspection of said vehicle. Personally, i don't think any R56 has yet come up for smog check in a CARB state, so who knows if techs are actually inspecting under for the 2nd cat. If you remove both cats and are unlucky enough to get pulled over by someone knowledgable, they can cite you. It's rare but it is possible to be towed/impounded. My friend had his 240 impounded and cited for no cat among other numerous other issues including the speeding and illegal lane change he was pulled over for.
That said, there is debate as to whether or not you will pass the sniffer w/o the 2nd cat. Next year should see 07's come up for first round of inspections in CA, so we'll have to wait for the answer to that question.

Correct. The resonator has nothing to do with your emissions because it is only there to keep the sound of your exhaust down. If you live in a CARB state and remove your 2nd cat then there is a high chance you will have problems passing the emissions test.

Ok thanks. Also, would removing the 2nd cat make it sound better than only removing the resonator or would that not make a difference to the sound?

That's a good question. I have been meaning to make a exhaust vid of my Mini. I know that with removing the 2nd cat I get more throttle response and my exhaust is a little more free flowing. It might be a little louder without the 2nd cat but not be much. I will see if I can make a video in a couple of days.

hahaha oops! Just realized I live in a CARB state and have a catless DP and a factory JCW exhaust from the DP back. Luckily I kept my stock equipment just incase.
Not to hijack, but after how long after buying a new car is it required to do emissions tests? Does it purely depend on the state?
