Dumb question but I did this on my old VW and it worked great.
Anyone on here cut up the top of the dealer-installed JCW intake box? Looks like it would let a bit more air in, doubt it would give any real gains. Maybe sound a little nicer. Any ideas?
You spent $30,000+ on a JCW and want to do a literal hack job on it?
Yes we do!
Actually, I have the dealer-installed JCW airbox with the Alta cone filter in it. It looks like I can cut the top or the bottom of the airbox, even with the stock JCW cone filter in place.
I think I'm going to cut the top and see what happens. If I cut the bottom and bad things happen it's probably going to be a more expensive part to replace. Plus, the "cold air tube" runs into the bottom of the box. I want as much cold air as possible in this thing without dropping $$ on the M7 Super AGS.
Maybe I'll even cut some more holes in the hood......

You can stick these in the holes. Have fun! In any case, this should be a learning experience.
What are those and where can I get a few? If not for the MINI, maybe they can fit over carbs on another project of mine....
I'm not sure if this mod will be beneficial or detrimental. (I'm leaning toward the latter). However, UNI Filters makes the part above. They're called "Filtered Air Vents" Here's a link.
Thanks. Those just seem like they would look better on a project bike of mine. I have some flat side carbs and don't feel like using the typical KN cones.
And what is everyone's problem with cut springs? Shorter and stiffer, if that is what you are looking for. Of course, you need to be sure you have sufficient free length which is a problem with short stiff springs. Mini's don't happen to have taper ground ends, so cutting is a perfectly viable technique.
All beneficial mods do not have to cost money. Slotting the strut towers is free and works perfectly well. Choosing alternative alignments do not require buying expensive parts. Working with tire pressures is free. Oops. I forget. I am talking to people who spend hundreds on strut tower braces that have no effect on the chassis at all, but they cost a lot and I guess some think they look cool. Sorry for thinking.
Measure a modification on the effectiveness, not ill-rationalized bias. Think about what you believe you know better than the OEM. It may not be easy.
