It's easy

1. Drop exhaust
2. Remove heatshield
3. Remove bottom shift box cover
4. pop off shift cable
5. Install SSK
6. Reinstall heatshield with dent for shifter
7. Put exhaust back in place

It might be for an R53, but I think the procedure is the same. I did it on my r56 last fall, I think I used those same instructions. It's pretty intuitive once you get under there and start looking at it. Good luck!!

With the helix short shift adaptor will you need the blue aluminum box (shield) that NM engineering sells to keep out dirt etc? It is recommended by NM if you use their short shift adaptor...(R56)

I'm going to modify mine with some aluminum, rivets, and caulk.

Well, some say you don't really need the plastic box because the exhaust heat shield covers up the linkage anyway. I bought the NM Engineering box with the bump out (they just take a stock plastic box, cut out a section and glue a smaller plastic box onto it to give clearance for the short shifter). It fits fine, and now there is no way any dirt can get into the linkage. I guess that's up to you. BTW, I paid $89 for the new box, pretty expensive I thought. Actually, I could have done the same thing with my old box, but this was easier.

Installing the Helix (or NM) short shifter is the best mod I've done to my car.

Well so much for my idea of saving the plastic box and modding it, and cracked it in half trying to get the stupid @%$#% off

Directions were close enough to make sense. Love the mod This and my new torque inserts = love.
