I 2nd the K&N drop in. Bunch people will post about the oil mesing with the MAF, but I dont believe it for a second. The filter isnt super saturated with oil to the point of dripping when you take it out of the box.
OEM, Fram, Mann, Purolator and replace every 10,000 miles. Replace the cabin A/C filter at the same time. Rockauto dot com has great prices and selection of brands or go to ebay. I stocked up and got 3 of each, Fram air filter and Mann cabin filter. I would not trust a K&N to keep enough crap out of my engine to maintain low wear levels. The ITG is nice for foam, but you have to clean and oil either of them and the alleged power increase is marginal at best. Mostly a little more noise!
^^^Exactly. I wil never run an oiled filter so it's ITG and aFe for me. aFe was on sale and easier to source so it's what I went with. It'll pay for itself in about 3 or 4 OEM changes.
Just ordered an aFe on sale. I like that this filter is long lasting and leaves the oil behind. Gets high marks, but it's my first one so I'll see how it goes.
I put an Alta foam air filter in my MINI last year. I haven't noticed any difference in the sound, and I can clean and re-oil it when it get dirty. I figure it's just less stuff in the landfill. I kept my almost new OEM filter, for when I have to let my foam filter dry and drain after washing it.
Put a plastic screen from a screen door on there. That offers the best protection with added protection.
That is the kind of stuff that this thread sounds like. If you want reusable go with ITG or K&N. If you don't mind replacing it go with Fram or something similar.
Plus, it's reusable. The idea of buying something over and over again when you can easily reuse it completely boggles my mind.
It boggles my mind that so many are attracted to foam filters which are notably inferior to OEM paper filters from an engine protection standpoint (especially when you don't clean them very often) and require the hassles of cleaning and re-oiling.

Some you do oil, my Alta foam air filter is oiled, right out of the box. Oiled air filters work in a different way than disposable paper filters and they do flow more air than paper filters.
