I am completely stock right now. I'm initially doing Stage I; I'll probably move up to 2 closer to summer time.

You will love the NM tune and when you upgrade to stage 2 you will really get a kick in the shorts! I have seen my boost gauge nail 21lbs and hold 20 on a good day.. It will change day to day with air quality but that's what I've seen and it runs like a champ.. On an average day it still pumps out around 17 lbs all day no problem..

Curious question, could I run a stage 2 without a DP and just my intercooler? Thanks!

I agree as I have the NM tune as well. What did you do though to make it a stage II?

I'm not sure that's possible.....you'd be surprised how much an aftermarket DP opens up the car.
You can tell the car exhales better the second you switch out the stock one.

You do lose low end power if you aren't tuned and say....catless.

I don't think I want to move to stage 2 after I talked to a few people about tuning my MINI. I will just stick to stage 1. But if I feel I modded my MINI to have a longer longevity then I will do it. Thanks for answering my question.

You wouldn't have a problem with stage 2 from
NM. They road tested it for 2 years to make sure it was reliable. On top of that the numbers they tune for are actually pretty conservative.

I have a stage 2 NM tune and only running an upgraded intercooler, intake and custom exhaust. No issues here.

No DP? And what kind of custom exhaust do you have?

Straight pipe from dp to a magnaflow straight through can. I contacted NM and the said either a dp or intercooler will be sufficient for stage 2.

That's what I thought. I don't want a DP. Thank you(I have my magnaflow muffler, waiting to install).

Hi Guys,

Been reading the recent posts, sorry if this has been answered before...

How come the Renntech and ETG tunes do not have Stage 2 tunes? Is it that their tunes will adapt to whatever mods you add later on after the tune?

No you have to tell them the mods you have, before sending in your ECU.

Hello gentlemen, I have been a lurker on this forum for almost 20 days now, and I have read everything humanely possible as it relates to tuning. I have a Mini Cooper S Countryman MY 2012, build date 10/2011, but with a big difference; I currently live in Brazil. My MCS is automatic and obviously there is a restriction on the torque that the slushbox can handle. I have two questions that I did not get the answer for, the first relates to the capability of using the OBD port for tuning purposes, does anyone knows the cut off date that Mini changed the ECU or encryption mode that precludes this way of modifying the parameters of your ECU? This would be the best route, as I would not have to ship my ECU to California or Florida for tuning. The second question is related to the torque level of the tune, if I install a larger FMIC, get the two less restrictive tubes from NM and get the tune either from them or Renntech, would that increase the torque above the 250 lb/ft that Theta started experiencing the transmission to indicate failure to the ECU and have surging issues? I would truly appreciate any help here, as a newbie on the Mini World I am still a little confused about all the options.

You wouldn't need both boost tubes. All you need is the hot side since you got an N18 engine. As for a tune on an automatic, you might be able to do what I will, that is a in between stage 1 and 2 tune. But Jerry from NM said for longevity, stick with a stage 1.

First, there is NO N18-based MINI that will allow OBD port tuning. As such, no Countryman will allow OBD port tuning. Trust me - I had one of the first in the US.

As for the Auto tune, stick with NM's stage 1 or speak with RENNtech about their tune for the N18 automatic. Either tuner will make sure you don't exceed the limits.

Skip the cold side pipe as Rob said.

Theta, I am a little bit confused, have you heard about this British company called Evolve? They do say that they have an OBD capability for the N18, you can take a look at their page. I am going to give them a call tomorrow to find out.

It's not possible, plain and simple.

The physical link to interface with the DME via OBD has been removed. It's not a debate with two sides -- it's absolutely not possible on the new generations of Siemens/AG DMEs.
