2012 exhaust rumble

Hey !

So my dad got a 2012 MCS coupe after seing my 2010 MCS hardtop and driving it. We are both pretty stoked about our latest acquisition but the exhaust on the 2012 has something to it that the 2010 does not. Let me explain.

On sport mode, the 2012 when rev'ed up to about 2000-3000 RPM and throttle left off rumbles and backfires some sweet sounds whereas the 2010 does not at all.

Does anyone knows what causes that and how to make my 2010 do that ? I figure at some point they changed the exhaust system or maybe fuel mapping in sport mode but damn I want to do this !!!

Any ideas ?

So a search on Pop and Burble - the 2012 with the N18 engine has a different tune causing the noise

Pop and burble used to be standard equipment. Now you have to push a button. That just doesn't seem right.

From N18 engines, there is some pop and burble sound when pressed sport mode. As I know, 2010 is N14 and even you remap the ECU that sound won't come.

I have a European spec N14 JCW that when the sport button is activated allows the engine the backfire bang, as I call it, on overrun. But somedays it is much more active than others and it is gunfire all over the place and I don't understand why. I have an RMW tune and meth as well.

I get the really loud backfire pops when the temp is about 70 degrees. If I shift in second or first at about 4000rpm or less is when it does it the most.

It's in the software calibration for 2011+ models for the classic pop 'n' burble sound of 1st gen MINIs. Any earlier R56 will not do this.

On my R53 (I know you are all talking about second gen but I still feel this is relevant), it seems it pops much more after long periods of idling and after hitting boost...as well as it seems to happen much more frequently on hotter days. This leads me to believe that higher intake temps lead to more pops.

Sweet rides! If you want your 2010 to do that/make that sound; put on a Magnaflow exhaust.

Check it. http://youtu.be/XT-30CjzWdQ

There are a few threads on this already; search "Pop and Burble".

There is no way to get the same pop and burble on your 2010 that your dad has. I have heard some tuners may be able to tune the sound back in but I can't confirm it.

If your looking for more agression out of the exhaust, try removing the resonator and/or 2nd cat.You will get smaller pops and a nice growl. It won't effect emissions or give you a CEL, and it sounds great! tons of vids on youtube of it but here's mine
