Mixing/Matching Flywheel and Clutch Brands?

Did a search for this but couldn't find a thread addressing the issue in general, so it goes:

Should you be okay mixing flywheel and clutch combinations on the 6-speed getrag, or is it best to just stick to the same brand for both?

In my case, whenever the time comes to replace the clutch, since I have an R50 with the gearbox of an R53, I definitely want a lighter flywheel than what I currently have. The justa cooper RPMs feel sluggish in the current setup, which is the Valeo single mass flywheel conversion kit.

I'm thinking of using the Clutchmasters FW-801-SF steel flywheel mated to the Valeo single mass clutch service kit (#52151204), which is originally intended for the Valeo single mass flywheel.

The R50 stock flywheel is about 16 pounds. The Clutchmasters is 13 pounds, so I'd be in the ballpark of the stock one. The Valeo single mass is around 25-26 pounds - and in my opinion too heavy for the naturally aspirated engine.

At any rate, would appreciate any opinions/experience with this any of you might have. TIA.

Yes, you can mix them. It's basically the same as taking your OEM flywheel and getting it resurfaced while using a new clutch disc and pressure plate -- Unless somewhere it's otherwise stated. However, and this should be obvious, don't mix pressure plates and clutch discs

I replaced the clutch in my old R50 back in August of last year and some guy is still driving it around UTK campus a year later.

Brandin - thanks for chiming in. I figured you should be safe to mix and match different flywheels with clutches. Not mixing clutch and pressure plates of course makes sense.

It seems I've run by a few posts of folks getting into problems with clutches and flywheel fitment when replacing the clutch - thus my reason for starting the thread. Not sure what the issues they ran into were though.

Seems like I should be fine with what I'm planning on using when the time comes.

Hmmm. The only issue I could really think of is if they got an R50 and R53 clutch mixed up. They're almost identical if someone didn't know better. If I recall correctly, the inner diameter of the R53 clutches are 1" as opposed to the R50's 13/16". Also, the spline count is different between the two as well as the outer diameter. So maybe the people who had problems mixed R50 and R53 flywheels and clutches (e.g. mixing an R50 flywheel with a R53 clutch). Hope this helps!
