Door Brake/Check Strap

I've been meaning to fix my drivers side door for a while now. For those who have done this, is buying a new part always in order or is it just a matter of fixing/adjusting what is already there? Ideally I would like to attempt to salvage what I have rather than buying a new one. From what I've read its a very straightforward job, but is there any tips or tricks I should know before I start?

Don't know why I put this in drivetrain. Feel free to move this.

There are two types of door brakes dependent on your year. Ones for up to 5/2003 and ones from 5/2003 on , for the Gen 1 MINIs. R50 R52 R53

Door Brake - Priced Each One per door -5/2003 production part # 51211166471

You can spray them and add some grease but it they still pop and click you have the parts linked here. I would also spray #2 and #3 hinge as they will help pivot the door better.

Also inspect the door brake and make sure the little bolt on the door and to the body are tight.

Thanks

Perfect, thanks. For that price I think I might as well just buy one and be done with it

Quick question...should I grease this thing before I install it? and if so what kind is best? I know I probably should, but I'm so sick of my door slamming on my leg that I want all the friction I can get at this point lol

Dependent on what type you have above, they come pre-greased in certain locations. See the pics, black type is pre-gressed on the upper and lower spring mechanisms and pivot, metal finish and greased on the roller end and spring. You could use a little light brown grease similar to the sunroof grease. Or white lithium grease.

My April 2004 build date R53 uses the second type. Once it fails to function it is broken and can not be repaired. Easy to replace, however, provided that you know how to remove the inner door panel.

I bought the newer version. Thanks for the info guys. Rennline has a really good video for the installation of their door pulls that shows how the door panel comes off. Seems simple enough
