Intake gets here tomorrow! Definitely going to have to go the ceramic coating route at some point...but I ordered a hood scoop heat shield from WMW for now. It's cheap ($30) and it looks like it will block a good portion of the Air duct from the scoop. Guess we'll see how it works this summer when it hits 118 :-\

I'd agree with you...if I weren't in phoenix. It's common for it to be 115+ for a week at a time during the summer. Its decimated the plastic under the hood. Nearly every clip on the ecu wiring harness had melded together or warped so badly they broke when touched. Hell, even the battery cover clips (And hinges) became so brittle they snapped off with almost no pressure applied. I'm taking precautions. Not EVER putting the EAM heat shield on.

This was AEM heatshield and stock turbo heatshield on. The idea being the AEM assisted in keeping heat away from the top of the engine and intake area. And it did. Too well in fact it, it trapped all the heat right at the valve cover.

NM Heat Shield: After 10 Months

This thread put the fear of "hell fire" into me. I just removed my NM Engineeing heat shield wondering what I'd find. There were no signs of any heat-related damage (warping, melring). That being said, I've removed it just in case.

I've attached some photos of the engine with the shield removed and of the underside of the shield. Really, all looks fine.

So is the consensus her to either use a turbo wrap and / or have turbo, DP etc ceramic coated and just ditch the AEM heat shield?

I installed the AEM intake/heat shield about 2 months ago and would like to avoid any of these issues...

Can you run a turbo wrap and heat shield or would that still be trapping too much heat? I like the way the engine bay looks with the shield installed.

I talked to Way and the NM team out here in SF at the start of MTTS 14 and both said these cases are isolated. Your call but I am keeping my NM shield on.

I have the AEM heat shield on and trimmed to only cover the hot side of the turbo. The rear portion of the factory heat shield is on and the top of it is cut so that the AEM shield is sitting on the cut I made. (This way there is no space between the two heat shields. I think I had to cut some of the AEM spacers to achieve this fitment.) I also had the turbo wrap on. I recently took the wrap off and found what appears to be surface rust on the turbo and haven'n re-installed it.

I believe ceramic coating is in the future for me.

I have the VIP heat shield on my clubby, it's great it is not a solid sheet it has slots to allow the heat dissipate evenly and restricts the heat build up. Best option in my opinion.

Been running my AEM since the first of the year. 9K+ miles including many drives of 4+ hours and MOTD. No issues at this time.

thanks for the feed back guys. Guess I'll just keep an eye on things. Might add the Alta turbo blanket just for some extra protection

Are you running the AEM intake without the shield? If so, won't that plastic air channel melt?

I went all this summer without the shield. The plastice air channel is very thick, it would take much higher temps than what the engine alone can produce.

Between warping the cosmetic air intake and melting the valve cover with a cosmetic heat shield, I will take the former over the latter all day. The former is way cheaper than the latter, and wont get you stranded, or start an oil fire.

Turbo heat shields are just an eye candy, that on occasion, result in melted valve covers.

If there's some way to block the hot air from coming across the corner off the valve cover it'll be ok. However, the only time I had an issue is when the down pipe came lose (after 136,000 miles) the hot air could only escape frome the open corner in the shields. It's was because the down pipe came lose. Not from normal heat dissipation. I had all the shields on, AEM kit heat shield on, lost the intake boost tube to the cooler. Turbine side was ripping red hot. Still didn't melt or wrap anything. Downpipe comes off, your screwed. It's melting that valve cover no matter what heat shields are on. I melted TWO in 1 day before I realized the downpipe was loose Personally, I run them all. Sorry about the past response.

When I get home, I'll take a picture of what happens to an AEM heat shield when the down pipe comes loose. It almost burned a hole right thru the sheild. I'd take pictures of the valve cover but the got thrown out already.

That ceramic coated turbo is the sex0rs.

How much did that run?

A local coating shop here quoted me $250 to do a pair of V8 longtube headers inside and out. That was a few years ago though.

I forgot how much they were. Been a while now since I had this done and a lot of other money pit items I've bought along the way, but I don't think it was more than $250 for the turbo and downpipe probably.
