Just wanted to hit you guys up for thoughts on doing mods to this setup.

I am planning on pulling air from the area behind the plastic cowl. My question is, which method would work best. The open "swiss cheese mod" or some sort of sealed ducting?

With the BMP/ProMINI setup the top of the stock airbox gets replaced witha metal curved top. What you don't see in any of the pictures of this product, is that the end facing the firewall is acutally open to air. So you have a sort of half circle (approx half of a 6 inch circle) that is open to draw air from the inside of the engine bay. This is probably not the coolest air.

That said, my tendancy would be to fashion some sort of duct work that actually fills the open end of the new airbox cover and the ducts back through the plastic cowling.

In theory it should be drawing cooler air this way right?

This is a long standing question-

For an intake to be effective does it need to have purely cold fresh air or will it do as well with mixed fresh air and hot engine bay air or will it do better taking air from the rear cowl area?

According to the results in this thread on hot intake filters-
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rum=11&141

The results are rather good for using the engine bay air even if it is hot. This may be because as the car is moving there is enough fresh air entering and leaving that the intake temps are not that bad.

If you need a duct for your air intake mod then see this -

Piper cross intake duct

* Inner pipe diameter 75mm
* Rampipe outer diameter 120mm
* Overall length 0.75m
* Colour - black pipe with red ends

Cool air is more dense than hot air, so the cooler the air you are drawing the more air you are sucking in. The more air you suck in and the more air you blow out the faster the car will go, everything to make a car go is designed around sucking in and blowing out more air. Its possible that the back open portion of this device, while exposed to the warmer portions of the engine, causes a negligeable amount of warm air to get mixed in. :smile:

If the cold air is soo much better, then what was all the hoopla about the hot air intake?

"Cold" is relative.

So is there a difference between a true cold air intake and the hot air intake?

I haven't seen any of the "cold air intakes" being shown to change the temperature of the air compared to the stock intake.

seanbancroft, I did the "swiss cheese method" when I had the minimania intake on, then took the whole bit off when I got the Alta CAI. I'd say swiss cheese it. Take care!
