P1772 - Turbine Speed and Engine Speed in Transmission Range D Correlation Read more

Got this code today on my 05 Mini S.
Drove about 25 minutes on freeway and then on to surface streets. When taking off from a stoplight the car would wind up on its own without me putting any extra gas then thud shift into 3rd. Then, The car didn't want to shift into gear from a standing stop at a stoplight. The car died once I went into neutral and then back into drive. Restarted then inched along till I started using paddle shifts. Continued to drive erratically till I got it to the house where I shut it off. The cooling fan then started running really loud after I shut the car off. Got the scanner out and put the key in and the fan shut off. Did the scan and got Code P1772

Anybody have this issue before?

I took the car to Braman in Palm Beach and they were able to get the car to reproduce the issues but the car was not putting out any codes. The system was communicating with their scanners (they even used an aftermarket scanner in addition to the shop scanner).

They could not come up with a reason why the car was slamming into gear or stalling.

Anyone have any insight?

Don't have any insight on your problem, sorry. But if your car is an 05, I'd recommend posting this in the R53 forum. Yours is a different model, so many of the people here (like myself) would just be speculating. Good luck.

That's probably why your not getting responses.

Im trying to tell whether its a transmission problem or something else... But have you ever serviced the transmission? You may have signs of valve body issue.

Never had any transmission work done on it. We are second owners of the car and bought it about 1 1/2 year ago. I talked with a mechanic today later and he said it could be valve body issue.

At 93k and guessing the ATF has never been changed I would bet the valve body is giving you issues. You could try and do a few fluid changes and see if that clears it up! But im sure if you change your fluid you will be shocked at how dirty and burnt your fluid will look. You should change the fluid in your transmission every 30k or so. I would try that first.. It will take a few changes to work all of the old fluid out. You wont get it all out on the first change. It may take several changes. Are you doing the work or do you have a mechanic doing it for you?

Hey Zippy,
Thanks for the replies.
We've not changed the fluid in the time we have had the car. @1 1/2 yr. I wouldn't be surprised that it's black though. I don't believe that a tranny has forever fluid that does not need changing like Mini claims.

Only oil changes are what I've done on it.. Not sure what the PO had done with the car either. I've got a mechanic that will do the job. He was pretty good at explaining the possible issues yesterday so I'll probably take it to him. I do know there is an oil leak and I've been topping it off every month to keep it full. Hopefully the PO didn't burn the valves on it before we bought it.

Turns out it was the valve body. Runs like a charm now. Super smooth. $2200 for the fix. I think I'll check out the class action suit to see if I can recoup any costs.
