JCW intake and Exhaust VS aftermarket

I have a question guys. I have a 2008 Mini Cooper S with the JCW package from the dealer. Would it be beneficial (more HP) to change the JCW intake and exhaust for aftermarket. I like the looks of the AEM intake and there are several decent exhaust out there....but could I expect much difference compare to the JCW? Thanks in advance

In my opinion, the JCW Tuning kit airbox is the best intake available for the MINI. It's why I installed it on mine. As for exhaust, you will see some improvement by replacing the exhaust with a DP-back unit, since it eliminates an un-used cat. However, the biggest improvement will come from replacing the downpipe itself. Even keeping the tuning kit exhaust you'll see far greater improvement then just replacing the exhaust.

Thanks for the info. Will eliminating the un-used cat cause a CEL? Pass inspection?

I'm running the Invidia DP-back exhaust which eliminated it and haven't had a single problem with a CEL (because there isn't a sensor attached to it) or passing emissions.

The JCW exhaust doesn't have the second cat.

Looking at the official installation instructions for the tuning kit, the cut in the factory exhaust to install the new back section is made after the second cat (aft of the mid-chassis brace).

I'd have to say this would be a very low bang for the buck mod or mods. For my money I wouldn't bother, but only you can decide.

Stick with the JCW kit you have. If you really want performance from the engine get yourself a: catless DP, DV, Hot side boost tube, FMIC, and a tune. You already have a good intake and exhaust.

Don't waste money on a magnaflow or some other cheap exhaust alternatives. Too much drone if your ears can't handle it on the highway.

Please check your state laws for some mods

Screw state laws. If there is no inspection, they'll never find out.
Alternatively, you can keep the OEM parts and put them back for inspection, then put the race parts back on after you pass the inspection.

Not to deviate from the OP, but do you know if it is the same air intake that came stock on an '09 JCW? If I remember right there was an upgrade available for the JCW as well in '09 but mine has the stock one. Wasn't sure if going aftermarket would be worth it compared to getting a FMIC and tune.

The airbox that came in the 09 JCW was the same intake that came in Cooper S's so the JCW Tuning Kit airbox would be an upgrade to your intake.
