Hello Everyone,

I was doing some research on exhausts lately for my MCS and I ran across the magna flow exhuast on Special Vehicle Concepts MCS. They made some big hp claims so I email magna-flow to confirm the details of the system and this is what I got back

"Blake- Yes we just released the system for the type S. I do not currently have any pictures of the system- However I know the HP gained was 18.1, and the torque is 15.5 increase. It is a dual center exit. the tips are round with a rolled edge. It is a really nice looking system. Of course it is a full SS system backed by our Lifetime Warranty. Thanks for your interest inMagnaflow Performance.
Ellis Lloyd"

Sounds like one hell of a system. Only problem is I haven't heard much of anything about it in the forums. Special Vehicle Concepts swears by the system, so I was hoping for some input. For those of you who havent seen it, it looks very much like the borla system. Look forward to any experiences with the system

Blake

Until there is some kind of *independent* verification of those claims, I would be very skeptical, considering every other exhaust I have seen is claiming more like 6-8 hp gain at the wheels for the S.

Yep, I'm never cynical but I'm very skeptical.

Hey DID,

Those were my feeling exactly. Hey, if it does produce 18hp, hell put me down for 2. But those are some very strong claims. Thats why I decided to post it incase anyone knew anything that I didn't about the system. I am so close to deciding on the borla, but something in my gut doesn't feel right until I see the JCW system. I am also eagerly awaiting the release of the UUC system, I had some of their stuff on my audi and it was bomb proof (esp. the short shift kit) I have a sneaky suspicion though that come begining of january when I drive my new baby back to cali from texas, I might have to take a bit of a detour to see DiD and ficcion and get them to set me up with the borla system. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also what do you think would be the best intake combo with the borla system? Thanks for the info

Just got another email from magna flow:

"Hi Blake,
The system for the Mini Cooper "S" was just recently completed and
we will not have "professional" photos for a week or two. I have attached a
photo taken from the SEMA show a couple of weeks ago. The Performance gains
were very impressive, H.P. gain 18.1 Torque gain 15.5 ft lbs. I have sent
the first shipment to a dealer of ours, and I know he is selling them for
$599.95 You can contact him at (714)637-1357
Thanks for your interest in MagnaFlow.

jcates@magnaflow.com
Jim Cates"

I really hope the hp gains are true, but I am still a bit skeptical. Attached is the pic he sent me of the system

I'd rather have the MINI tips than those things...too big for the scale of the rear skirt...

Hey, if it actually gives you 18hp, they can stick a coffee can on the end of my exhaust. But if we are talking about on a few hp, like some of the other systems mentioned in the forum, then I would be concerned about the finishing touches. But yes the tips are a bit big, esp in the sema pic, but on the car itself it doesn't look that bad

It's RandyBMC that's opening up the MINI turning shop in Denver.

On that pic of the Magnaflow, the hangers look a little long. Or at least they don't appear to put the mufflers in the same spot the stock ones are now.

Thanks for the clarification on the shop. As for the hangers being too long, I wish I could say I had that much experience with my mini, but being that it is getting off the boat in NY right now, I will have to wait to get familiar with it for a few more weeks.

I'll try to take some close up pictures of the hangers on Friday when we put the Borla Exhaust on my MINI. When we did RandyBMC's car, I really don't remember the hangers being nearly that long (stock or on the Borla).

How are you liking your borla system? I was curious which side of the fence you were on: Looks and sounds cool but no real hp gain : or : looks and sounds cool, I can definitly notice a difference. In regards to in car noise, is there any drone while at hwy speeds. I had a scorpion system on my a4 that I really like, subtle, not ricey, at idle was barely noticable, under WOT such a beauty. Man do I miss that car, but I have a sneaky suspicion that after I get my mini those feelings will go away.

My system hasn't shown up yet, so my impressions of the Borla system are from a rather long drive we took to scout a drive over the weekend.

It's kind of like the Rogue intake in a way... just cruising around, there isn't a noticable difference in cabin noise, but if you get on the gas, it is slightly louder and deeper than stock. Check out this excellent thread that ficcion put together for a sound clip. The one thing I was surprized with was that Randy has the stock intake, but the exhaust actaully accentuated the supercharger whine when he got on the gas. Obviously I was impressed with the Borla system as I put in my order after seeing the system in action and helping with the installation.

Thanks for the help dave. Ficcions thread on the system is great, I had already checked out the clip, but sometimes its a bit dificult to get an idea of sound when it is so upclose, I'd be interested to see some footage of drive bys and burnouts to compare cruising with WOT.

This is exactly why I am not chomping at the bit to get
aftermarket goodies. 12 months from now I'll see what is
out there...

12 months from now you could sell any of these mods for about 1/2 the price you paid for it and get something else, while having enjoyed the mod for a year. Seems like an ok trade. My $0.02

Dave,
I count on people like you to help me make informed
decisions down the road.
So let's see, you buy now, then something
better comes out and you sell for 1/2 the price you paid.
Keep me on your mailing list.
I won't be driving the Coop much the next several months
anyway. Motorcycle season is in full swing down here.
Have you priced motocycle parts lately?
I can't keep up.....there is too much stuff and not enough
money to buy it all. I wanna win the lottery...
Michael

Sounds like a plan dave. Just out of curiosity, what is the cheapest you have been able to find the borla system for.

Unless they are not showing the full kit in that pic, the Magnaflow system does not even go all the way up to the cat???? It would be good to see someone throw that system on a chassis dyno that does not work for Magnaflow. Its real easy to trick a chassis dyno and make the numbers read what YOU want them to read.

Turner Motorsports has the Borla for the lowest price I have seen, plus they have them in stock.

18hp!!

I'm not only skeptical but I just don't believe it!!

Hopefully they prove me wrong! It would be nice to know the MCS has that type of potential through exhaust modification.

The guys with the Supertrapps were claiming and pretty confident they were getting 15hp. This was the highest I had seen.

I am puzzled by the design of the magnaflow. There is no real "Y" from the single pipe where it splits to the two mufflers, rather it just tees into the loop of pipe that connects the mufflers and directs flow against each other. Also no real flow out to the tips, they are just teed off of the loop at the point there will be lots of turbulence. This certainly doesn't appear to follow any kind of optimum flow dynamic that could create ANY hp gains, much less 18.

18 HP, ummm...,,yeah

I think a realistic claim for that poorly engineered system would be -18 HP, there is no way that thing flows better than the stock exhaust.

Still waiting to hear back from magna flow in regards to seeing the dyno results and under what conditions. It will be very interesting to see how they got that number. I still have my eye on the borla system.
