Drivetrain Comprehensive Intercooler Discussion
#51
I'm all for real vendors. There are certain things i'll save a few bucks on if I don't agree they warrant their price. Intercooler was one of them. I have all name brand everything else. My exhaust will end up custom which is unfortunate but also cool in its own right as i will have freedom to tune the sound the way I want. I have bought name brand stuff from ECS Tuning since my 08 R32 and will continue to do so. Id never trust an eBay bov or turbo that's for sure lol.

That's the IC i got recently. It fits great, no trimming needed, relatively plug and play. I drive to work this morning and was getting between 1-4 degrees above ambient on my IATs. Im gonna log some data on the way home tomorrow (stop and go traffic heading in to DC rush hour) and see how it performs then. I'll post the data as soon as i get it deciphered and put in to a csv file.

Let's try to standardize on a measurement technique. 3rd gear pull from 2000rpm to redline worked well for me to show the difference between the stock and upgraded intercooler. That seemed to be a long enough pull to max out the temp rise, and it keeps the top speed from being too extreme.
Any suggestions for other ways to look at it?

So it appears that the ebay intercoolers are capable of producing +10_deg delta-AT's on a single gear pull, which is comparable to the the ONE data point we have on the branded Wagner intercooler from squawskibum.
I'm curious about heat soak. Just day dreaming here, but it would be nice to get data from track days. So after 3 or 5 laps or so, what do the delta-AT's look like.
Wait a minute...where is the brand name brigade posting data to prove how crap the ebay product is?

I'm hoping to get some track data in January.

+1 on the brigade, lol. I tried to log some data the other morning in 3 hour DC commute stop and go traffic, but I was still 'learning the ropes' of my app. I observed some temps at around 10-12 degrees above ambient while in traffic. As soon as I hit open road, it recovered within maybe 1-2 minutes of fresh air flow. Wasn't paying much attention to it, but will try and snag some data next week and post it.

So a little story, few days a go my right side headlight ring flew off of my car at HWY speed hit my windshield but did not do any damage. But as I was looking at my dash command I saw that the air intake temperature went way down to about 2 degrees above ambient and stayed there the whole time from work to the house that it is about 1hour drive. Usually I get about 7 to 9 degrees above, so just to match I took the other one off awaiting for my new one from ESC to arrive, this morning about 10 AM I drove to work had some stop and go but not that bad and to be honest I drive hard but never went over 3 degrees above, tonight coming back from work home on a wide open drive never got over 2degrees usually with none stop driving 5-7.
I think that there is more air getting under the hood and keeping the turbo cooler?...
Could this be true?

Yes, having more cooling air going through the engine compartment is going to reduce the intake temps because everything will be a little cooler.
But your car will absolutely not be faster.
There will be two pretty significant aerodynamic penalties. First, there will be an increase of aerodynamic lift on the front axle. All that air rushing into the engine bay will create a positive pressure that will create lift under the hood. So you will not have as much grip available for going around bends. Second, there will be an increase in drag. Your top speed and acceleration will be reduced. Any additional hp that the engine makes will be eliminated and then some by aero trade offs.

yes and no, the street speeds are not so high that the aero dynamics take that much of effect on the car and the lift from under the hood is not much to effect cornering, not that i am going to drive the car with the rings off just waiting for them to arrive, but one thing for sure the car and 4th gear and up feels much faster using my throttle at a lower presure
since i have the carbon fiber hood on my car maybe i should think about some venting project.
