engine block similarities

Can someone tell me if the n12 and n14 blocks are the same, or at least, very similar? Like to the point of only missing the oil squirters, etc.?

I have another thread over on MINI Torque, but someone might get some value out of this, so I am reposting here.
------------------------------------------------
Considering the minute details that I have been provided, I took some pics of the two blocks that I have.
Both are from an S model R56. One a 2007, one a 2009 The casting numbers are different on each.
So, that does nothing to help the situation. Either that, or it confirms that they are not significantly different.

Aug 2009

To add more mud, the casting number of the '09 block matches some of the N12 blocks I have seen for sale.
So, I request again.... If someone has access to both an N12 and an N14 block, side-by-side, can you please compare the two and report back?

You could go to realoem and see if the part numbers are the same.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?

If the part numbers are the same, it would mean that there is no difference.

I have done that.
The part numbers available are for the assembly, not the block and/or lower half.
This link shows the S diagram.
This link shows the non-S.
They do use the same front and rear seals, best I can tell from RealOEM.
It's a given that the crank/rotating assembly are different. It's interesting to note though, that the crank in the N14 is used in the N18 (and some F series too).

My whole point to this is to figure out of they really did pursue the cost cutting measures and used the same block for both engines.

Realoem now shows N14 engines and blocks for all years of the R56 for some reason,
so that doesn't help either.

Factory JCWs maybe? It always used the N14, correct?

No, JCW's moved over to N18, but just later than S. GP2's are N18 for example.
