Define Twin Charged

Ok, so we know Hubie has got a twin charged turbo system. And others on here talk about it as well. Now MINI is saying their new engine on the MCS will be a twin charged turbo system.

What exactly is the twin charged part of it? I know what a turbo is so you can skip the basics. I don't think its the same as a twin turbo where you have a small turbine and a larger turbine but I don't really know.

And I also don't expect MINI's new twin charged engines to be similar to the high performance ones that Hubie and others have.

Thanks
Matt

twin charge'd uses two charging methods, a super charger and a turbo charger

The next MINI is only turbo charged. It may have a twin turbo (not sure), but all that means is that there are two turbos, not one.

The new MINI engine will have a "twin-scroll" turbocharger which "uses alternating exhaust pulses, the manifold pairing up cylinders one and four, two and three. This cuts turbo lag because the flow of exhaust gas to the turbine is split into two lighter and faster reacting gas flows."

I thought that twin charged meant either two turbos, or a turbo and a supercharger. But you are saying that twin turbo is not the same as twin charged?

Forgive me, I am not well versed in car terminology or mechanics.

That would be a turbocharger, not a supercharger.

The general usage of twin-charged (on here at least) seems to be having 2 chargers, either super or turbo, in series. Air is compressed by an SC or TC, then compressed more by another SC or TC.
Twin turbo usually means turbos in parallel, where there is a TC for each half of the engine.
Twincharging should be more effective, I would think.
