help!!! my 5 speed trany is making a lot of noise

To anyone knowing about 5speed transmissions. I have a 2002 mini cooper non "S" with 64000 miles. The trany is making a winding noise in 3,4 and 5th gear. The dealer wants $5500. parts and labor. Now does anyone have a use trany? Can I replace the 5 speed with a 6 speed? your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Einstein

Differential noise? It would probably be a good idea to first check the fluid level in case it leaked out of the Midland.

Can you be more specific with regard to what the noise sounds like? I don't know what a "winding noise" sounds like. When my Midlands transmision failed after a weekend of driving in subzero weather, it sounded like I was driving down a rutted driveway with icy snow in the middle scraping along the bottom of the car. A seal had sprung a leak, and the tranny was replaced under warranty.

the noise sounds some what like a quarter rolling on a glass table, it also seems like there is a lot of play when you acclelarate and decelarate. It could be the diff or the ring and pinon gear or the main drive gear with a crack tooth. The question is now... should I just get a new Mini or fix this one? If I can find anyone to fix it.. I'm surprised that with all the shops that sell an antislip diff, I can't find anyone who does the install? Maybe they can rebuild it while it's out....Can't seem to find anyone here near LA or in Southern Cali.

Yeah. Mine was doing this for a week or two, about 20 minutes ago I blew the transmission to pieces. Good luck, I'll tell you what my 'dealership' says

The shifter flops around and no matter where I move it I get first gear

I cannot describe this summer, dear god
Blown tranny, destroyed the suspension, real life drama, etc. I guess a Mini isn't the car for me I'm going to hunt for a 91/93 MR2 Turbo starting tomorrow.

The seal let go on my tranny also, got it to the dealer in time to save it, they put in a new seal, but still replaced the tranny.
The new seals they are using now are said to be better, and it did make through some -45F conditions.
The thing that gets my knickers in a knot is MINI knew those seals were bad, but did not do a recall. so instead of changing a $30 seal, they wait to do a
$3500 tranny swap

No, grinding, even in neutral, I noticed it when I was a red light, after my 50 mile commute. Drove straight to the dealer, the fluid was down about a 1/3.
We can go into the service bays at my dealer. The tech. drained it and there was lots of metal bits in it. He had already said I would get a new tranny as soon as he heard it.
He then flushed it, put in the new seal, and filled it with fluid. Sounded fine and drove like normal till the new tranny came in 2 weeks later.

You can check for the seal leak by looking under the car, in line where the bonnet latch is under the axle.

I now check all the time.
