update - code P0136, where to go from here?

the printout from Autozone says "The PCM has determined that a malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for oxygen sensor 2 in bank 1." So would that mean that it's not a problem with the o2 sensor, but with the wiring? It had been suggested in a previous thread that it may have been caused when installing my catback, undue stress may have been put on the wiring. But the code occurred yesterday, I would think that if it had been this that caused this, it would have thrown the code a week ago when I did the exhaust? I began a new thread for this in hopes of getting a more direct answer about the topic at hand, and it helps to have the code in the title.

I got this code once for no apparent reason (no exhaust mods yet, either)
a few thousand miles ago. I checked the wiring harnesses for the cats,
and they seemed ok, and have not had this (nor any other code) come
up since. a mystery...

also, if I were to have to change the sensor and wiring, where does the wiring plug in in the engine bay?

If it was a false code then the SES should go off in a day or so.

Sorry your having this problem man. Wish I had advice to offer.

As Pat Goss would say...

As Pat Goss would say: "Codes don't mean anything, they only tell you which test procedure to run".

Unfortunately the codes don't actually tell you the problem, and can be misleading. The only way to really find out what it is, is to have the service book, and find out what test procedure matches up with that code.

Otherwise you'll just be replacing/fixing things in the dark.

okay..then can someone tell me what goes along with this code as far as procedure? I'm not willing to spend 100 dollars on the book if I'm about to have to spend 160 dollars on an oxygen sensor.

Contact Audioman... he had one of those books at the install party. He may look it up for you

thanks, I really need to get this resolved, my gas mileage has gone to crap and it hurts to know the car is running poorly.

and I havent been over 4000 rpms since it happened. It's killing me. I need to go fast.

Hopefully the procedure isn't to complicated. I wish I had a book to help you out, but I haven't picked one up yet.

Maybe we should get a thread started with some of the common codes and procedures together. I don't mind paying for the book, but it would be handy to have some online info for questions like this.

My guess is that the O2 and exhaust codes come up a lot with this group because of performance upgrades.

had a stall or two with the a/c on pulling out, but no MIL light earlier this week.
Today the light came on with a P0136 code (see post #2 above - happened
one other time about 7-8 months ago).
Reset the code again and it hasn't come on again and the car seems to run fine.
Will watch and wait but expect no real problems.

this has happened to me!

my car has been absolutely guzzling fuel. When i put a 17% pulley on, it made virtually no difference in power. I throw the ASC light all the time while doing high revs in 3rd and 4th gears. The bottom end torque and throttle response is crap. However just yesterday, while taking my car out for a spin for the first time in two weeks, i repeatedly was throwing the SES light. What is going on?

bump.....
anyone?

Would a stuffed oxygen sensor cause bad throttle response at all?

i just got a p0136 code the other day! my car has always been getting poop for millage and i think this O2 sensor or something about it is to blame! the only mod i have done is the VGS a few weeks back. What sucks is that i have to wait 2 and half weeks just to get in to see the service department in Portland, that is such a long wait.

this is my theory, everyone who is getting bad MPG's has a bad O2 sensor or related component and is running to rich, but is only a little bit off not enough to set everyone's SES light off!
Its just difficult to explain how some people are able to get 28 mpg with half city half highway while many others are getting 28 highway on a good day and 18-20 city while trying to be as economical as possible and a 23 mpg with 75% highway and 12% city.
something just doesn't add up, and its not a lead foot either.

I wouldn't worry too much about that code. there is a bulletin for it and programming to stop it. Did this code pop up after decelerating or coasting down a hill after a cold start? I had this once, but I don't usually meet that criteria and it hasn't happened since I cleared the code.

BMW said my lambda readouts were fine and that my car wasn't using fuel excessively. My fuel consumption is scary.

My SES light came on after hard driving, so.....
