Oil filter saga part II

Last time I checked in I complained about the oil filter housing leaking after every oil change - the O-ring breaks upon installation. Mind you, I've driven nearly 1.9 million miles so far in this life time, changed every filter myself with zero trouble.

Yesterday I performed another oil change. The filter was on correctly, and, the O-ring installed in its proper place. I replaced the old filter, but retained the old O-ring based upon a suggestion a month ago. I reinstalled the housing - this time I had no problem getting the housing to catch the threads. I tightened the housing down by hand and then gave a light snug with a 36mm socket - very light snug. Turned the engine on and it leaked like a mother. I took the housing off and the O-ring and filter looked fine. I installed a new O-ring and attempted to get the housing back on...it took 15 minutes of swearing before it caught the threads. Once the threads were engaged, I needed the socket to spin the housing on. Once tight the engine started with no leaks.

Every other time I replaced the O-ring, the filter leaked. Every oil change has consumed two O-rings; the first one breaks and the second one works.

I cannot figure this out. I change the oil every month based on my mileage. This is an absolute pain in the @#$^#^!!!!SS!!!!

this is my only idea, do you rub oil on the O ring before attaching it? could it be binding? Good luck

Yes, every time, with every filter on every car. Mobil 1 5W30.

I even used a light coating of high temp bearing grease in the past on the Mini...that didn't work either.

I've got a boat load of filters in my garage and no O-rings

Did you try a new filter housing? If so, the next step would be to try a new oil cooler. If you need a new housing, I can send you one to try (just promise you won't mess it up like you did with the old one).

Andy,

I've made an appointment with my Mini dealer. Hopefully they can find the problem...and I hope it's me.

Appreciate the offer...but if it is me, yours won't work again
