My car has 73000 miles on it, and I've been chasing this issue for quite a while. I think now that a lot of MCSs are getting up in miles, more and more of us could benefit from this.

ps, I started a thread about the decarbonization here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=74535

Clean the combustion chambers
Use colder plugs
Use the m7 t-stat (if you can accept the occassional code)
You will be happy
I had almost no pinging over the 115* weekend and was I trying to get it to ping. The little bit I did get was still nothing compared to what I would get in 70* weather on a regular basis.
Glad to see you plugging away at helping the mini community. People say I have a lot of patience, but I'm about one suedo guru away from logging off. PS. I am hot and agitated (but ping free), can you tell.

Matt, I'm at about 40k (only drive her once to twice a week), so not really high mileage, but ready to try this! And since I'm due for an oil change in the next few weeks...
I have an M7 t-stat, but never installed it. Peter said I can try it, but given where I live, Winters can make for below freezing temps. Oddly, just today my home weather station recorded a new high of 118.4 degrees. My record low is 18 degrees!
I can deal with an occasional code, but since this will ulitmately be a Fall/Winter car only, I'm not so sure the t-stat will be an ideal choice for me. And God forbid a code goes-off during a smog inspection. I still might try it though.

Might be carbon, but I suspect it is combination of things. See https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...7&postcount=11 for my full description...
One thing I have noticed, as I've been hitting the engine harder lately testing for overall HP changes with CAI insulation, the pinging is significantly reduced, maybe gone...
My wife's late brother used to tease me about never red-lining cars, maybe he was right, maybe you have to hit them hard every once in a while to blow the carbon out. That could also explain why not everyone has this problem -- I tend to like to drive like an old lady.
Anyway, sorry for my glee, but I take heart that I'm not the only one.
Best,
-- Don
