NAPA carries the stuff.

Sea Foam Motor Treatment is about $9 a can. And Tony, I thought about you when I did this. I think a lot of us high milage people can benefit from this.

ps, I started a thread about the decarbonization here: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ad.php?t=74535
Glad to see you tried it. Did you use the sea foam? I have mentioned before that the m7 stat works and that the cylinder head temp is higher on the dme priority list than air temp. at 70* and using 91 octane ca gas, my timing curve was within a few degrees of your post that tested 100 0ctane. People that have not tried, let alone tested the stat or decarbonizing the combustion chamber are making bold statements (negative) about the effectiveness of doing this... but it works!

Clean the combustion chambers
Use colder plugs
Use the m7 t-stat (if you can accept the occassional code)
You will be happy

I had almost no pinging over the 115* weekend and was I trying to get it to ping. The little bit I did get was still nothing compared to what I would get in 70* weather on a regular basis.

Glad to see you plugging away at helping the mini community. People say I have a lot of patience, but I'm about one suedo guru away from logging off. PS. I am hot and agitated (but ping free), can you tell.

Oops

I guess I type too slow.
DrO, I see you did use the sea foam.

Tony, thanks for the kind words, but I am not so much knowledgeable as I am resourcefull.

One more thing to add...

I cleaned my injectors after just one year of use. They were mismatched by over 4%! After cleaning, they matched to about 1%. That smoothed things a bit right there.

Matt, I'm at about 40k (only drive her once to twice a week), so not really high mileage, but ready to try this! And since I'm due for an oil change in the next few weeks...

I have an M7 t-stat, but never installed it. Peter said I can try it, but given where I live, Winters can make for below freezing temps. Oddly, just today my home weather station recorded a new high of 118.4 degrees. My record low is 18 degrees!

I can deal with an occasional code, but since this will ulitmately be a Fall/Winter car only, I'm not so sure the t-stat will be an ideal choice for me. And God forbid a code goes-off during a smog inspection. I still might try it though.

The install isn't too bad.... 45 min or so, going slow

the first time. So you could put it in now, and remove it when you start hitting the cooler months. That would give you 6-10 months a year for the benefit.

Hmmm, I'm sorry it's happening to you, but I'm glad someone else is having this problem... Ping ping ping... I'm probably going to get flamed for admitting it in a message on the YAY!!! pulley thread, but I've also had some pinging lately.

Might be carbon, but I suspect it is combination of things. See https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...7&postcount=11 for my full description...

One thing I have noticed, as I've been hitting the engine harder lately testing for overall HP changes with CAI insulation, the pinging is significantly reduced, maybe gone...

My wife's late brother used to tease me about never red-lining cars, maybe he was right, maybe you have to hit them hard every once in a while to blow the carbon out. That could also explain why not everyone has this problem -- I tend to like to drive like an old lady.

Anyway, sorry for my glee, but I take heart that I'm not the only one.

Best,

-- Don

Thanks Matt and 002, as you know I've been struggling with detonation for quite a while now too, and the recent heat has not made things much better. I'll give this stuff a try.

Just did the treatment this morn. As I have been having pinging and deminished preformance. Didn't tell the wife since she drives it daily. She's the unknowing test driver. Today she asked if I did anything to the car because the Mini is running super smooth.
Thanks Matt

minirox - how did you inject the sea foam, through the gas tank or the intake??

Thanks.

Disconnected the gas vapor valve intake side and used my vacumn gauge hose and a small funnel. It is on the passanger side next to your ground wire jumper. The top hose is the intake side.
