MCSa Alta CAI hose installed

Well here it is. The hose you have been waiting for.
The Alta CAI hose for the 05-06 MCSa.

The install is 90% the same as on a MCS except for the addition of a second nipple on the left side of the hose. The second nipple requires a small amount of hose to make the connection.

Here is a bad pic of mine:

Installation:
Well I have never installed one of these hoses before and found the install to be a real pain. Mostly because the folks at Alta did such a good job at making the hose fit super snuggly. Which is a good thing. But after alot of frustration and fitting and refitting I got it in just as you would a MCS hose except the second nipple. Thanks to Randy Webb of WMS for a great How-to.

First impressions:
I don’t know if my butt-dyno is out of wack or not but..
The CAI sound has more of the lovely sucking noise and supercharger whine that we have all grown to love. I can hear the tap of the throttle better then before. I can’t tell if there is an increase in hp from the hose but in the past people have proven the hose adds a few hp.

Price:
For a hand fabbed peice it is priced right @ $119.99 from Alta

Did the addition of the hose change (better or worse) the CAI Whistle?

Whistle is a tad worse. But that only bugs me on long drives.

Looks like you need to clean the filter. A K&N cleaning kit will do the trick.

Gosh..why does everyone say that....

The CAI has been on my car for 15k and has been cleaned twice and it never gets any redder then that. I really think photos make it look darker then it is.

M7bar is gone. Alta box top and air diverter are sitting on the shelf and need to be reinstalled. Also a few small bits that will be posted on my blog soon.

mdsbrain,
That kink in the hose isn't supposed to be there. In your package there was a foot of hose that is supposed to be looped around to make that connection smoother and allow the hard line to be pushed out of the way of the corner of the box.

Your intake may not have gotten instructions. For this i am sorry. We were so far behind in getting these out that some might have gotten missed.

Looks sweet!

I just installed my alta CAI on my auto S with the hose and let me tell you this....

1. Didn't come with any extra hose to make those two side connections.

2. Didn't need any extra hose as everything lined up and connected just fine.

3. The whistle when applying a light throttle is maddening. Honestly, makes me want to paint the walls with my....well you get the idea.

4. All the other sounds are sweet.

I'd love for Alta to tell us what we can do about that whistle. That can't be the way it was designed. It ony occurs during light throttle. It wobbles, it's unsteady, it's very high pitched.

I've heard that doing the VGS mod can help greatly reduce the TB whistle. I have yet to do this mod.

Talking with Alta the additional piping isn't always needed. Some cars were made and need it and soemdon't.

Just did the VGS mod on my 05 MCSa last week & eliminated the worst of the CAI whistle. The onset & pitch changed & whistle is totally gone from the 2-2,5M cruising RPM. The mod is simple and reversable. Just do a VGS thread search & you'll get all the info you need.

I will probably do the VGS in the coming weeks.

Any special tips or suggestions aside from what was in the main VGS thread?

I have the auto as well.

I have an MCS auto with the Alta intake and new silicone tube as well. The whistle was grating on my nerves for months. I reinstalled the VGS (had taken it out as part of some troubleshooting) and indeed, the whistle all but disappeared.

Am very happy, by the way, with the new tube. Well made, installed correctly, looks good and may even add some HP but who knows.

RE the VGS mod, I found it was easier to remove & reinstall the intercooler by totally removing the boot clamps from one side. The boot was then much easier to compress. Also, when reinstalling, be sure to tighten the inside clamps first; this seems to seal & prevent boot movement. Long needlenose or 90 degree needlenose pliers helps with vacuum line connections.
