Cold weather, more power

This morning driving to work in about 65 degree weather I was shocked to feel SO MUCH more power than in the last couple of weeks where we had 90 and 100 degree weather. I know, as I am sure most people do that the colder the air the more performance you get, but I was truly shocked to be able to feel such a difference.

Anyway to manufacture this effect without having to totally replace or get a newer or better cooling system?

Live above the arctic circle.

~1% hp gain for every 11º F.

Brrrrrrrr. There have gotta be better ways than living in 40 below, hehehe. With you calculation that means I felt about a 3 hp gain due to the weather. Is that really a noticeable gain while driving?

It's 1% remember. It's also just an old guideline that may not be dead on for FI cars running with an IC.

Even so you're talking 3% of 170 hp. 5.1HP Woo Hoo.
I know what you mean though, it feels like quite a bit more. Also bear in mind that ambient is one thing IC outlet temps may, and do in my experience, show a greater drop in temps.

Thanks obehave. I missed the 1% thing. That does feel closer to the feeling at 5 HP. I wonder if torque increases differently than HP with the lower temps. Maybe that is what I feel, more than the actual HP bump?

thoughts?

HP = Torque x 5250

I doubt the torque curve is changed - though it may be higher at higher RPMs if temp caused the ECU to retard timing at high RPMs due to heat...

NO but I live in Florida and I found that a M7 DFIC made a significant difference

Good observation and YES there is a way, a good intercooler! The cold air is giving the motor denser air. So to replicate this in a hotter climate is to cool the air as much as possible with a intercooler. That's why people with some IC are saying how hard they can feel the car pull. It must be cooling the air enough to feel the effect. So something to look for when purchasing a new IC are the before and after temps. OR your could move to the north pole I hope this helps! -- Johan
