I have a 2002 MCS and would like to change the taillights to the 2005+ versions with the reverse lights in the corner units. MINI made a retrofit kit for this (part no. 63210309436), which had the fog light in the bumper, but it is no longer available. I called a dealer who said that while there is a kit available, the warehouse will not release it to any US dealer or customer because it is not DOT compliant.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how I can get this kit (either from someone in the US or abroad). Thanks in advance.

 

Look for a member named Abuzavi. He was stationed in Germany up until recently, and has a few German dealer contacts (they speak English). You might want to send him a PM.

 

An easy way to do it is put red bulbs in the reverse lights of the 05 spec lights so they operate as fogs & the reverse stays in the bumper

I just wanted to let you know I have found both the instructions and the retrofit wiring harness, to whit, the following:

Goggle search “mini cooper retrofit wiring harness”, click on the fifth one down “parts and accessories installation instructions”, www.oliver-vogler.de and you will have the installation instructions for the retrofit taillight wiring harness 63 21 0 309 436.

Goggle search the 63210309436 part number and the second one down “BMW retrofit kit – rr lig (63-21-0-309-426), www.worldimpex sells the wiring harness for $188.95. I should have the wiring harness by the end of next week unless there is a problem.

The LED taillights are available from Moss Mini (1-800-895-2471), P/N 102-820 for clear and 102-821 for smoked, price $299.95.

The smoked lenses are not available until September 01, 2009, so I have to wait a bit.

I checked with my dealer "The BWM Store, 6131 Stewert Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45227, 513-871-8700, and talked with the parts guy, the Retrofit Wiring Harness, P/N 63-21-0-309-436, is available from them for $189.xx with a 2-3 week waiting period because it has to come from Germany.
