Adding obc dispaly to navigation dual cluster
I started off a few weeks ago with the mission of adding the on-board computer display to my dual cluster on my steering wheel. I have a R53 with the on-board navigation. I was frustrated at having to go through the options on the screen to see my range. Not knowing much about how the system worked, I bought a single tach with the lcd display. After taking off my dual cluster, I was disappointed by finding out that they weren't single clusters screwed in together, but rather two gauges that were built together as one unit. Searching the net I found the dual cluster off a mini that had the chrono package which had the dual lcd display. It was a simple install/swap of the gauges with no reprogramming of the computer required.
I also added the headlight stalk with the computer button on it, and wired it to the power out on my radio switched power supply, and then another wire to the back of the navigation screen following the official MINI OBC install pdf and the retrofit OBC pdf. Everything works fantastic.
Now the only problem I have is that the new dual gauge lacks 3 lights. The tire indicator, the trunk/hood light, and the overheating indicator (important!).
I opened both guages in hopes that I could track down the wiring of the 3 lights so I could tap into them on the new one, and hard wire the lights else where in the car. I believe I found the points on the IC chip in the gauges, but am questionable on them being correct since the IC chips in both have different part numbers on them.
One good indication was that where the lights were wired on the chip on my old guage, on the new guage nothing was wired to them. I tried my best to solder wires to them (I am pretty good at soldering a 7 - 8 if 10 is the best solderer out there) but just couldn't as the IC chip contacts are too small (about half the width of a dime), and I don't have the right equipment to solder something so small.
Now the question, is there somewhere I can find alternative wires/output that I can wire lights to these 3 systems. I know the bcu doesn't have any outputs for these. What about the wires on the back of the nav screen? Any other ideas?
I've included pictures in case anyone wants to follow what I did and see the two different IC chips. The one with marker tracks is my old guage, and the one with soldering marks is the new one. I've also included pictures of the indicator lights, so you can see the difference.

Sorry had to remove some links cause I kept getting a rejection on post. You can get the rest of the pics by replacing the last jpg file name with the following below: 2.JPG, 3.jpg, 4.jpg, b.jpg, c.jpg, t2.jpg, t3.jpg, t4.jpg

I agree. OBC is essentially software (except for the switch). I think Nav systems already include OBC coding. People without Nav have retrofitted the OBC by only reprogramming and installing the switch.
I doubt that any amount of soldering will activate those lights. The cluster turns them on according to commands on the digital bus.
