DME replacement with used
Hi i had to change my DME with another because mine has a problem with auto start stop function.I've readed that you can replace it with a used, and change vin with WinKFP.
i installed it and before changing the vin i got this error from DIS
How can i fix this problem or it will be fixed after changing the Vin?
Thank you

Hmm this is interesting. I also am in need of an ecu due to one of the pins being rotted off from crap unichip harness. Originally I was going to either try and open it up and run a jumper or get a used one and send it out to have the plug assembly soldered in. If I can do this though it would be the more feasible solution as ibdont know if there is any internal damage. The car has run fine like that for about 9 months with a p2d4? Code for power supply control 3 but recently I've been having issues with first the coolant temp sensor failing and giving a high reading causing a no start in cold weather and now the thermostat not opening and fan not running. I know they seemed fine previously so they could be unrelated but I feel I should have the Ecu taken care of

here it says that you can use a used.but it doesn't say how you can sync it with the CAS.

I dont know if you can actually align the DME with the EWS4: The CAS, DME and Steering lock communicate with 128-bit encryption. The key is only supplied by BMW on new DMEs so used ones cannot be used. That's the official statement... But definitely, just coding in the the VIN is not enough.
If there is a way to synchronize the unit, then you will find the command (job) in TOOL32 and loading the appropriate DME prg.
Update: Read here... The EWS alignment is no longer relevant on EWS4 vehicles and a new unit must be ordered from BMW. :(

Update: After playing around with Tool32 I can definitely say, there is a job there for writing the Secret Key in the DME. The job is named "STEUERN_EWS4_SK". The key is given as a 16-byte string and there are two of them a client and a server key.
I believe you can read the keys by using function "STATUS_EWS4_SK" in the "CAS.PRG" module, provided that the keys are stored there. The same function used in the DME should return the keys stored from the old car...
I haven't tested any of this, but it appears to be possible, as long as you can actually read the Secret Keys.

Yes... Load Tool32 and from the program load the ECU file you want to communicate with: in the Cooper S the DME is "MED172.prg" (or something similar, I am away right now). The ECU files are the ones in the EDIABAS\ECU folder.
You will then get a list of jobs, which you select by single-clicking and then double clicking to activate. Some commands (STEUERN etc) need you to provide options and/or data which you enter in the next window on the left separated with ",". Another window includes explanations of what you have to enter, what you get in return and what the answers mean.
Another window lists the results of the and the errors of the operation in hexadecimal form.
You need some time to familiriaze yourself with it...
PS: Maybe the best choice to source the Security Key is to install the old DME in the car and read the SK from there "STATUS_EWS4_SK". The codes stored in the CAS may be encrypted i.e. you will only get "000" back.
