Electrical Tail Light Wiring Help Needed
#1
I have an 04 Cooper and just got finished installing a trailer hitch. Now I need to wire up the harness. My meter is dead and I can't determine what wires do what at the taillights. Does anyone have these wiring diagrams. I need wire colors for both right and left taillights (if different). Thank you for any help you can provide!

I think this link will give you what you need. Select #4 Wiring Harness and take a look.

Does that hitch have supports that slide into the
unibody rails under the heat shield? where exactly
is it bolted and do you alter the bumper fascia to
allow for the bar that hangs under the back. Are
you going to order the wiring harness? If so would
you please send me the part numbers, also are
you planning to use the entire harness? It looks
complicated to install.

Bad4fun, sorry I hadn't noticed your questions sooner. Remember I have an 04 Cooper (non S) so I only know how this worked on mine. All I had to do was raise the car, lower the exhaust and you will see the frame rail on the driver side in clear veiw. You will see this has two holes about 5 inches apart from each other. They are mounting holes. On the passenger side the frame rail is covered by the heat shield. However, you can make out where the rail is since the heat shield mimics the underside of the car pretty closely. All I did was remove heat shield material from the frame rail begining at the muffler hanger (you'll see) and continue that frame rail wide cut all the way to the rear of the heat shield (this must be done to allow access to the frame rail and to give the hitch clearance). When you are done it looks as if you have cut the heat shield in half. This strip will leave a clear view and access to the two mounting holes. Now you must slide the two retaining (mounting) strips into the frame rail, this is easy, and line up the holes so they are visable thru the frame rail holes. The next step is to hold up the hitch and insert the screws thru the hitch, thru the frame rail and into the retaining strips. This is a delicate (and amusing) process. It would be easier to do this with the car on the rack and the help of a friend but I did it on jack stands by myself. It was tricky getting the screws aligned and holding the hitch but I managed. One pointer, don't tighten any of the screws until all of them have been started then, like a tire, go between each one and tighten and then go back and tighten each one again until they are all secure. Then you are done the hitch part, no permanent damage other than the heat sheild. The finished product looks clean and isn't as obvious as I thought. Seems strong too! Regarding the harness. I would order one just to be sure. I bought mine from a trailer/marine store and am still not sure why I am having problems. I actually think it is in the trailers wiring but till I figure it out I'm not giving any advise on this. As soon as I get it nailed I'll post. I hope this helped you.

2007 tail light wiring
I just got a 2007 MC and needed to install the Hoppy trailer converter.
The tail light wiring color code and pin out is different for the 2007 than for prior years, as I guess is everything else about the car. J.Dewey's 2004 diagram was very helpful to get me started but I soon realized I would have to verify all the wires.
2007 looks like this:
MINI......MINI.......Function.....Isolator.....Tra iler
plug pin.wire color...name........color.........color
----------------------------------------------
1 ........blue/grey......fog...........-..............-
2 ........yellow/black..brake......sm red.........-
3 ........grey/purple...tail.........brown.......brown
4 ........brown..........ground....white........whit e
5 (empty)
6 left...blue/brown...turn.........yellow.......yellow
6 right..blue/red......turn.........green........green
Instead of trying to snake the big red wire all the way to the battery, or bug into the fuse box, I ran across the floor under the inside of the transom to the auxiliery power plug, the left tail light wire had to go that way also. so now my trailer lights are on the cigarette lighter fuse. should be alright.
