Item #3 in diagram

#3 is included as part of the full package labeled as Storage Compartment Package, option code S493A on your vehice's build.

Some members have purchased that piece separately, if S493A was not an option on the vehicle.

People with a dog easily understand why one would want a flat floor...

I was wondering about just this and searched, finding this thread.

Thanks!

Just to clarify for those without this part... those of us who don't have the storage package and purchased the luggage compartment floor, we still don't have a "flat floor" like those with the storage package do with their seats folded down.

When my seats fold down, the seats are flat, then there's a dip down to the other floor.

Only those with the optioned storage package can have the fully flat floor (level with the down-seats).

Small price to pay but still worth it to buy that part and let it rest over the stock luggage compartment. Check out Cansa's post #33 for pictures.

Thanks ECS!

And for those of you wondering, those holes on the underside of the floor are for the netting which is also available. I didn't get the netting because I knew mine would be resting on top of other crap. If I had a working hinge, I might have considered it, and used the netting.

If I were handy, I'd consider making a wood frame with hinge points or even making and gluing hinge points to the side trim... but then again: I'm not handy (and don't have the necessary tools)..

Would anyone accept this challenge on behalf of those of us without the storage package?

A few weeks ago, I bought the luggage area mat from my local dealer and made a floor to go under it. The floor is made of Masonite, and I made side supports that rest on the angled areas at each end. I purchased some trunk bins from the container store, and they fit in the now hidden bay, supplying support for the center of the floor. I am very pleased with the results. I will make some photos and upload them soon.

This whole ordeal with the flat load floor and storage compartment in the back just seems like a very typically convoluted Germanic approach to what should just have been a simple one: a fitted box for the back with a locking lid which would serve as a flat load floor. Maybe a 3rd party can make one going forward?

I was able to retrofit the storage package to my car myself by buying all the parts shown in the picture.

One important part not shown is that item #7 - the catches to hold the load floor in the upright position mounts onto a different version of the seat back latches that come with the storage package. They are shown in the picture of the rear seats in the OPC. These are the latches that allow two positions for the rear seat backs - the normal one and a more vertical one. You could get away without these but you would have to fabricate a metal bracket to hold #7 in place - or you could just try gluing #7 to #11 but I suspect it would be a little flimsy like this

How much did it cost to buy all the parts?
I also think it's silly that they don't just make it standard. It just looks like they really had to milk the customers.

I seem to remember a "boot box" with an British flag for the top that went back there for the R56. Maybe it wasn't flat with the seat backs?

They still sell it, apparently.

Sorry to re-animate this thread but I just stumbled upon part number 51477298611 and feel a need to cover the pit in the trunk . The question for the ones who installed it: since it's "unhinged" does it rattle or clunk around in the trunk when you hit uneven pavement?

I'm a little confused by all the part numbers and diagrams, but I ordered my 2015 last year with the "Luggage Compartment Tray." It's a $198 option, according to the configurator. The top of it looks like #3 in ECSTuning's diagram. Is this the item you're asking about? If so, I have noticed that it does rattle a little IF there is no load on it. If there is even a small package in the boot I do not have a problem. I haven't been in for my first official servicing--coming up in a month or two--but I did stop by the dealer and mentioned it to the SA. He kind of patted the "lid" (that's what it looks like), and duplicated the sound. He thinks he can put some felt or similar cushioning under the center where the sound seems to be coming from, and kill the problem.

It honestly hasn't been enough of a deal for me to do anything, especially since at least half of my trips have a bag of groceries or something back there, with enough weight to keep it pressed down.

(If I've got the wrong part, I apologize. All I know is this is NOT the rubber mat some have referenced.)

Yes it's the item I was referring to. Yours sounds like the storage option which can only be installed at the factory. I believe the previous posters were describing just buying part # 3 and putting it on top of the recessed space to make the trunk flat.

Great thread. Thanks for bumping it up.

I just ordered our F56 w/ and storage package and am glad I did after reading this thread..

I was told at the dealership that with the storage package, the floor would not be level when the rear seats were folded forward. Without this thread I'd have never known differently. (also was not told about being able to set the rear seat back forward (a bit) to pick up some extra upright storage).

Great forum!!!!!!!

I purchased one of the hard covers early on and have never noticed it rattling at all. It's completely covered with carpeting which surely quiets things. I have noticed if I hit a seriously nasty bump or pothole that it will come up and thump back down in a noticeable fashion - or maybe that's just my teeth crashing back together! If I had it to do over again, I'd order the storage package option to get the hinges and all, but if that's no longer an option this one sure is worth the coin in my opinion.

Thanks for blazing the trail on the storage cover retrofit. I'll be placing the order. As far as the F56 MCS ride being teeth crashing, I think it's very compliant as compared to my previous cayman or your Olivia which feels like riding on cinder blocks when you hit a pothole.

Papa- you just set it back there and everything was fine?

I ordered P/N:51477298611. It ran around $150 delivered and that's what's been sitting over the well for almost a year now. It's quite rigid and will support lots of weight. I haven't had any issues with rattles and outside of the aforementioned pothole situation (and we have lots around here right now) it's as quiet as a church mouse. With a little forward pressure it will pivot right up to open, but there is no facility to latch in the vertical position as it would if supplied as part of the Storage Package from the factory. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Motor On!

Nice, most people are asking for the mounting hardware, which is shows on the etk. Glad it worked , pics would help also as many people are interested in this simple mod.
Kudos to you for trying it out. 51477298611

Sorry. I tried a couple shots over the weekend but it's just too black back there to get any detail in the pictures. I'm not sure if the carpeting in the boot comes in any other colors but somebody with say a tan interior may have better luck with a photo.

Yea, its dark interior and when new the carpet is very dark. You would have to do it in complete sunlight , with the sun shining into the boot ( trunk ).

I can vouch for papawhiskey's story. I failed to order the storage package last year for my F56 and got the hard floor insert to flatten the floor out. While it's not as slick as the storage package would be, it does the job just fine. It doesn't make any noise while driving because it fits well in the space and is completely covered in carpet. Similar to his story, the only time I hear anything back there is when I go over certain speed bumps.

I also picked up the boot mat, which matches my floor mats. It doesn't move around either.
