Thanks for the lively discussion. I feel very ambivalent. Sometimes I feel I should go with the S just for the engine, then I feel I should choose the equipment on the base. Or just a plain base and save a lot. Lol.

Your posts are very useful but I'm having such a hard time making up my mind...

Keep posting please!

Not much more others can say to you. Have you done test drives yet? Do that, then make up your own mind. Only you can decide.

I have a new cooper hardtop, non-S, manual transmission, with extras including arm rest. I love it and I know that it is just a 3 cylinder and 135hp but it has a torque range that totally makes up for anything it lacks in HP. The armrest is fine in my opinion and kind of nice to use. The throw on the gears are short enough that I don't have to move my arm to shift. I can't lie but I really wish I could have the front end air scoop on the hood like the S because I like that sort of thing. I but it is totally worth getting the non-S car and you wouldn't know you only had a 3 cylinder under there. When you put pedal to metal it shoots out and will put your head to the head rest. Also have the sports package and racing seats. That is worth the cost, I have a bad back and am in my car a lot!! I have 5,000 miles on it already. And I have not had any trouble with my back in those seats. Even after a 1,000 mile drive to Texas.

Well that is my experience and hope this helps. By the way I am looking forward to seeing who comes up with a tuning kit for it. That will be so cool!

Actually, the F56 Cooper automatic is as fast to 60 as the R53 Cooper S automatic. They were sort of correct, just had the wrong generation.

The Base does have a good amount of power under acceleration. After test driving both the base and the S I found that for my normal commutes, the base will suffice and it provides better gas mileage.

Well, I want to share with you all that I just paid the advance for my Mini Cooper S automatic, Blazing Red with White roof. It basically has all the equipment but the Navi.

I must confess I almost ended up buying a BMW but I ended up crawling back to Mr. Cooper. Or should I say Ms. Cooper? That sounds sexier, LOL
