You can't solve the issue without fuel flow over the intake valves. Catch cans are a minimal help, I'll probably skip it. I've been debating buying a media blaster though.
Drive the highway b/w 3-4K RPM on a regular basis. You will have minimal carbon buildup. It primarily happens on short trips where the engine is not up to temp.

Nope, don't think so.
As long as the crankcase breather tube is directed into the air intake, carbon build up is here to stay. Worse and more common on Direct Injected engines, because fuel is not cleaning them up. Instead injected directly into the head.
Just run some air intake cleaner once in a while like using BG kit.
