Window Tints: How Dark?

Hi,

I'm thinking about tinting the rear windows on my 2015 Volcanic Orange F56. I don't really like how it makes the car look but I'm sick of being blinded by the headlights of cars behind me.

I did it on my 2006 R50 but regretted that I did it too dark (20%). I thought it made the car look like a van.

I'm thinking about 50% but wonder if that will even make a difference. Any opinions?

Thanks.

Check your state laws and go with the darkest allowed.

Sorry, but I wrote the 20% I did on my R50 made it look like a van. So why would you say to do the darkest allowed?

Thanks.

I think he was pointing to an example of the below link. Some states don't allow any and others, anywhere up to 50%. Just a silly thought; how would a piece of tint cut to fit the mirror work avoiding the need to change the appearance of your MINI? No experience with this stuff but logic implies it might have the same effect you are looking for.
Here's a link to a chart with each state's tint allowances.

Funny, I was going to go with 15% because I have 20% on my current car and wouldn't mind a little darker. I was not sure because I have a Mazda 6 right now with more window to let light in. Anyone have 15% on their f55? 35% just takes the glare away I cant imagine 50% doing much of anything. I think personally 20% is my minimum.

The stock tinting on my JCW is quite satisfactory imo.....not sure if it's darker than any other 2015 MINI, but I hate real dark windows anyway. For night driving just flip your rear view onto night vision. FWIW, applying tinting can be awful too boot....and forget about ever removing it. I'll never use the stuff personally.

I think mine is 15%. On a different car though and I bought it with the windows tinted already. It's not too dark and not too light in my opinion, but it's "illegal" where I am from. I get hassled here and there for it, but haven't in a really long time. I've never actually received a ticket for my tint though.

I did 35% all around. Keeps out the glare and I don't feel like it affected visibility for me at all.
35% is the legal maximum where I live (Illinois).

Tango is 20% all around. I love the look, and visibility is not affected at all. I've had 20% on all of my cars.

Thanks for all the input.

Funny, if you google Volcanic Orange Mini, most of the images have tinted windows.

I think I'll go with 50%, maybe even 60%, just to help with the headlights, but try to retain the lighter look.

FYI, here in Israel there are no limits on the tint - as long as it's behind the driver. In other words, only rear seats and back window. Although some do a light tint all around hoping that police/test stations won't notice as all the windows look the same.

Here's my R50 (20%):

When ever it gets here (awaiting transport in UK) the first thing I am doing is tinting the windows to 20%, hard to drive a car without tinted windows once you have had it on pretty much every car I have owned. When I ride in other cars i find myself squinting all the time.

Living in Florida I want to cut as much solar warming as possible and remain legal. Same may not be applicable where you live.

Probably should have said - go as dark as you like within the legal limits of your state of residence.

Ended up going with the 50% and am quite pleased...Not too dark to ruin the exterior look of the car but dark enough to cut some glare.

Again thanks for the input.
