Wiper Arm Removal?

How do the wiper arms come off? I'm trying to change my DP and the wiper arms just will not budge. I've removed the cap, the nut, and banged and pried for an hour and they aren't even loose.

A wiper arm removal tool works the best, ECS Tuning has a few to choose from or Amazon.

They are impossible to get off aren't they? Nice time try using a rubber mallet to make them budge.

wiper arms are typically pressed onto a splined shaft

if they don't come off easy the correct tool is a 'gear puller'

Thanks for this. After I got them off I thought "I could've used a gear puller", looks like a wiper arm removal tool is pretty much the same thing. I'll pick up one of these if I ever decide to change a DP again.....which is feeling unlikely at the moment.

Totally should have used one of these. I could have even rented one from Autozone.

I have always loosened the nut and tapped it with a dead blow hammer to get it lose. Then it pops right off.

Mine wouldn't come off, so I let PB Blaster soak on there for like 10 min. Came right off on the next try. I will get a puller if I envision another need to remove them, they're only like $10 on Amazon.

This one works ok. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben.../023437sch01a/

I really like this design as its more study and you can use it on other things, also you can get on it easier and line it up: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-bav-auto.../b8800093~bav/

Just make sure you hit it with some PB blaster before hand. Make sure when you install to line it up on the old threads and push down and tighten with the screw, if not all the way on, it will strip the arm threads.

Geez, I actually have one of the first one (or same design) in a box somewhere. Picked it up over a decade ago. Which is why it's in a box "somewhere."

Wackiest thing, I finally got the courage up to mess with this last night. Found the nuts were not seriously torqued down. On a bit of a physics hunch, unscrewed them just enough to allow me to wiggle the wiper arms by hand, have some play, but not enough to "over-lever them" if that makes sense. Basically, they were either going to move a little and pop or not move at all, vs deforming or whatever.

Lo and behold, a couple of wiggles and... pop.

I will say that mine are alarmingly clean (I'm half-tempted to use anti-seize on reinstall). And since my windshield is not original (don't know when it was replaced but it was before 72K under the first owner) these have been off the car at least once before. So I don't know how illustrative my experience is. But it is interesting, given that the car has over 100K miles now.
