New hitch option for the hybrid?

I've got a 2018 All4 S E hybrid countryman, and I'd love to get a hitch for it.

I remember looking some time ago, And nothing was available (and U-Haul even had a standing offer for someone to bring their car to their R&D centre for a free hitch to be fabricated, so they could use the design)

Now, both the manufacturers and U-Haul claim that the Ecohitch X7387 will fit the hybrid, but Etrailer says it doesn't...

Anyone tried it? Anyone managed to fit a different hitch to the hybrid? Anyone got pics of the bumper off a hybrid to see what might be possible?

So, I've just had confirmation again from U-Haul and Torklift that the hitch will fit the hybrid.

I'm going to order one and see how it goes!

Will update update here

What's different about the SE? Is the battery in the way of a hitch?

That means the curt one should work. The bumper i believe is the same as the Cooper

its v weird, curt specifically says it doesn't fit the hybrid. Also,.e-trailer says the Ecohitch doesn't fit the hybrid.. Bottom line, a picture is worth a thousand words, and I'll believe it when I see one on my hybrid! Lol Is the Curt golo for more weight? I'd love to get over 2000 lbs back there.
thanks!

Also, looking closely at those pics, the matte plastic trim bit between the bumper and heat shield does look different between the two.

Let's see what the bondo butchers expert installers at U-Haul come up with!

The hitch is just part of the equation. With the back up camera and sensors how will those behave with a trailer attached?

I looked into installing a factory trailer hitch for my 2020 M-B cargo van.The hitch install was not the problem. The wiring harness and controller changes to keep the parking sensors from alarming like crazy when backing up with a trailer attached to the hitch was the real problem. A few owners managed but it was very expensive and it took some work to sort out the electronics/electrics...

Would love for this to work. Visited the Curt Mfg site to look over details https://www.curtmfg.com/part/115223

There is a compatibilty disclaimer that specifically states "Excluding Hybrid". If anyone takes the chance and tries it...

So, is a hitch on the hybrid for a bike rack or cargo carrier?

Neither, well, not to start with. I'm going to see how much I can tow

not yet, I have the hitch in hand but I haven't had time to install it yet. Also, the wiring they supplied is janky and I'd love to use the factory towing module instead, but I'm still hunting for documentation on EPC HG 17, an additional fan and cowling that seems to be....completely unknown in North America.

This leaves me guessing why they wouldn't list the SE being compatible. I'm guessing it is because the front is driven by ICE and rear by electric, so they wouldn't want a situation where the rated load on the hitch would be placed solely on the rear electric or front ICE and that cause drive train failures or steering failures that they could be sued for. Guessing there's a lawyer involved in why this isn't 'approved' for the SE's.

Thank you for figuring out this could be installed.

That, and I suspect it has to do with weight and the SE's ability to carry weight, and still have things like the transmission, regenerative braking and the ying yang interaction of the ICE and EV systems reliably work as designed.

Curious to see what the experience towing is with this car. Not that I have a need to tow with my Mini, but am interested to see how the drivetrain responses and what the impacts are to range and motor/battery life.

Yep, all that...

Personally, I'd like to have one simply to hang a bike rack or a hitch tray carrier. I don't intend to do any towing.

Yep, I'm stoked to try it too. Got the wiring installed, using the kit that came with the hitch. It seems to work given multimeter readings but haven't tried it with actual lights yet. Hooked up to the cigarette lighter socket circuit for power rather than running new wire all the way up front.

I'll be attempting as many of the SAE J2807 tests as I can without driving to Arizona/Nevada and the Davis Dam...will update with results here. I have data logging using an enet cable and deepobd so I should be able to get various parameters of interest recorded while towing. Would love to log at least temperatures of oil and coolant, fan activation %, ride height sensors.

I just need a cheap way to weigh the setup. No CAT scales nearby.

Planning on getting my dad's truck as backup while doing the tests. Mini F60 hybrid GVWR is around 5000 lbs, can't tow unbraked here beyond 1400 kg or 50% of licensed vehicle weight, so I think max for me would be 2500 lbs without surge brakes. Will use a utility trailer with like...maybe sand? A bunch of water in big jugs, so it can be ditched and lighten the load if something dodgy happens?

Anyways, fun times ahead!

Does anyone know whether the hitch can be installed if the vehicle has the power lift gate feature with the hands free foot activation? Can the latter (foot activation feature) be turned off if necessary?

MY 2018 All4 SE has the hands free power lift gate. It doesn't work great any more, but it was pretty useless and unreliable before (and yes, I read the manual, and watched the youtubes, it's not skill, it's crap design...) and also was constantly trying to open or close during install. It was pretty hilarious trying to wrestle with it with the tailgates hanging out etc.
