Why the JCW over a R32 GTI?

but its a bit old and not comparing the R32 to the JCW ... since you guys bought the JCW I want to know why you choose it over the R32?
Here is my debate ... the R32 is cheaper then the Mini (well cheaper then the one I built .. mine was $37K MSRP) has more power and is AWD (I come from driving RWD and AWD cars for the last 10 years). The Mini on the other hand has its small unique size (which I think is cool), is less weight (2700 lbs vs 3100ish), plus I dont see many minis really all that done up so it would be fun to go all out on one (my last two cars have been fairly modified)

R32 - 250HP 236TQ 3547lbs. 18/23mpgs
JCW - 208HP 211TQ 2700lbs. 25/33mpgs
The R32 has 14.2lbs to pull for each horse. The JCW has 13.0lbs.
The R32 has 15.0lbs to pull for each tq. The JCW has 13.lbs.
The R32 is $33k base. The JCW that you spec'd is $37k.
Yeah, it's more expensive... but you will spend less on gas and the performance numbers show that the JCW is less encumbered. The AWD helps the R32 out off the line... but after that the JCW should pull on it.

It's official: If you want to turn a woman on, ditch the Volkswagen Polo and get yourself a Maserati, which is 100 per cent guaranteed to get those vital testosterone secretions flowing.
That's according to research by psychologist David Moxon, who subjected 40 guinea pigs to recordings of the aforementioned cars' throbbing powerplants, plus those of a Ferrari and a Lamborghini. Having put pedal to the metal, he then collected saliva samples from the participants to measure testosterone levels, indicating the degree of arousal.
All the women tested showed "a significant increase in testosterone secretion after listening to the Maserati, compared to only half for men", as the Telegraph puts it. The chaps, meanwhile, found the Lamborghini rather more exciting, with 60 per cent pumping out more testosterone.
The Volkswagen, sadly, actually provoked a decrease in arousal across the board.

I caught a dude sleepin in his r32...I was gone before he figured out how to shift it. I stayed ahead of him the whole run. It was on a long straight 2 lane road with a barrier for the opposite traffic. It was fun. I think it all comes down to the driver? But....take it to the track, street racing is for punks. The track is where your real ability (or inability) will be revealed. Any idiot can go fast in a straight line. Its the turns that separate the men from the boys.
We should all sign up for a track day or something and get our own MINI Challenge thing going. Who's in?
VW? I was scared of their reliability. Consumer reports has a lot of red circles for that brand. MINI had far fewer...power, reliability, uniqueness, fun and great MPG in a little package. What more can you ask for?

Haven't done it it in a while, but last time I checked, VW's have horrible resale value as well. Heck we've been offered almost what we paid for our 1.5 year old MCS. Look at eBay motors as a guide. Look not at what folks are asking but at the items that have bids. It's a real good gauge of the market.

I think both sides are being pretty fair to be honest. The decision really comes down to what are you going to do with the car. If it's only going to be a DD, then maybe the R32 makes more sense than a JCW (A DD Mini is more of a Cooper or Cooper S). But if you are going to want to track the cars at all, the JCW will be the better of the two as a multi-purpose car.

I own both
I am an MKIV R32 owner. My wife recently got the Clubman, but I have driven the JCW...
If you are comparing the JCW to the current MKV R32, I think the JCW is a no brainer... It is, to me, a much more fun car, although not the ultimate handling due to the differences in FWD versus AWD.
THE MKV R32 is just not enough difference than the standard GTI for the money. The GTI straight up is an awesome purchase.
If you are thinking of buying a MKIV used, then I think that is the better option because it is flat out a superior car. Dated in someway in comparison, but still a better car on the track.
But I went away mightily impressed with my short JCW test drive.

Thanks guys for all the info. Im going to have to drive each and see how each makes me feel.
I can deal with quite a bit as far as comfort goes for daily driving ... my current 335i is on KW Var 3 and 20" wheels with 275/30/20s on the rear, my old evo was on 12kg springed coilivers and had full bucket seats in it

I love my R32. It's fast, but put it on S and it's just retarded. Not to mention the sound the car makes is freakin' sexy as hell. One of the best exhaust sounds ever IMO.
Now that I've gotten a chance to drive a Mini I was very surprised at how fast it actually is and how awesome it handles. It puts a huge grin on my face. Both are completely different cars in my eyes. The Mini feels more like a go-cart and the R32 like a touring car. Both awesome! Both fun!

I would love to be in your shoes. The R32, in my opinion, is one of the baddest hot hatches out there. When I was shopping for a car a few years ago the R32 was on my "man-I-wish-I-could-afford-it" list, but I was young and had to settle for something more practical.
After the RMW tune and the JCW exhaust (mostly for sound), I am incredibly happy with my R56. I've never driven an R32 so I can't compare, but every time I take a corner I just can't stop smiling. I heard an R32 accelerating just this morning and it really caught my attention. I think what I'm trying to say is, I'd love to own both!

I could have bought a choice of a lot of different cars but I opted for the JCW.
I'm happy I did because after 18,000 miles I still love my JCW. I still always look back when walking away because it just looks like it did the day I first saw it. (PERFECT)
I'm sure there are people that love their VW's just as much.

Having driven both plenty...
I feel the R32 is much slower than the JCW....its a little pig.
Bout the only reason I'd choose an R32 over a JCW is for the AWD, and maybe the fact that its a true German car, not like our bastardized German/French/British car

I think they stopped producing it, in the US at least. It's supposed to be coming back soon as the R20. Pretty much the same as the R32 but with the 2.0T instead of the VR6.
