So my FJCW has the usual pops/burbles

Sometimes it backfires as well and it's quite loud, love the sound of it.

However it doesn't seem to do it every time, it seems like it could be weather or air density dependant? Is there a logical explanation to this?

I don't have an answer for you, but I too have a gergle/popin question.
Mine is a '14 R55 auto
I had the gergle n popin at first but then lost it right after I took it in for a oil change @ 3000 miles.
Not I only have a low drone
It gets louder but it doesn't do anything when letting off in the corners and shifting through the straights
Like you, I too would like to know from others what might need to be done or looked at

It's somewhat dependent on how hot the exhaust system is. So if you've just started the car or have been cruising on the highway for a while it'll happen less. If you've been driving hard it should happen more. The hot exhaust ignites the unburned fuel leaving the motor causing the "pops".

 

Delete the resonator and you will really like it!

 

Because it is an idiot fake old school muscle car (old Mini but for the same reason) sound...
