Mark, you mentioned some SSR knock-offs that were cheaper. I'm looking at gettin some auto-x wheels and tires. What do you recommend?

Randy,
I haven't found any of the SSR knock-offs that have the same offset as required to run in a SCCA SOLO 2 stock class. That said, Enkei is supposedly releasing a RP01 in a size for the MINI that will match stock dimensions. You can see a picture of it here...

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/dt...s&index=12

I'm not sure when these will be available but give Discount a call to see if they are available yet. I would also recommend going to the wheel and tire forum here on the site and looking at the wheel weights and offsets post. It will give you some ideas of what is available from The Tire Rack and what is required in 15-17 inch sizes to remain stock. As mentioned in that forum last week there is also the chance the SSR will be supplying a SSR Comp to the Tire Rack specifically designed for autocrossing. It should be very light!

Keep looking for a bit. I believe more options will become available over the winter. Hope this helps.

I was able to find a good deal on "Rota" wheels - the Circuit 8 is the design. They are about 15lbs. Any info on them?

Rota is a pretty good wheel. Price effective as well. When evaluating option on wheels be absolutely sure that the wheel size and offsets EXACTLY match a OEM wheel option from MINI. (I'm not sure of if the Rota currently makes an exact match...yet). If you don't do this the car can not be entered into a stock SCCA class (ie - D Stock for Solo 2). In this case the choice of wheels could move you into a Street Prepared class with some seriously prepared cars (especially in the Colorado region)!

All that said, if you aren't planning to go to the Solo 2 Nationals and just want to have fun then anything goes. Given your racing background though I bet it will be hard for you just to go out and have fun without being competitive

What is the stock offset? The Rota I believe is 40mm. It would be nice to be able to "compete" - after all, that IS the fun part!

See this thread in the wheel and tire forum for the stock weights/offsets. I wish the stock wheel weights and offsets were listed with the aftermarket wheels of the same size instead of seperately.

Oh, maybe that's the thing I was forgetting in the afternoon session.

Randy,
Check out the following link which discusses all the rules governing stock classes in Solo II. Look specifically at the tires and wheels sections as there is a lot of useful information there. Additionally be sure to review the other sections as there are a minimum of things you can do to your MINI and remain legal for stock classes (ie - a rear swaybar change is not legal). Hope this helps!

Dave, Your runs smoked!! I wish I had done that well at my first auto-x
Thanks Randy. I'm very pleased with the results. I just put a lot pressure on myself sometimes. The autocross was challenging and fun, so I'll definitely be out there with you all next year for the 6 or 8 race series.

Thanks Mark. That is very helpful stuff. What is .25 inches in mm - 4 or 5? There are some pretty serious cars in DS The Rota wheel won't work then - it's 16x7" What is the rule on using width from the 17 on a 16? Thanks for your help!

Hey Randy,

This is the set up I have been eyeing for sometime: Link

16x6.5 wheel
12.75 lbs.
$165 per wheel
Due to be finished in December

Looks to be a winner.

I know that it is not the general fashionable trend, but I really feel that on a small car such as the Mini (or my VW GTI), 16" wheels are preferable to 17" on the track. Generally lighter and tires for them are much cheaper than ones for larger wheel diameters (a serious consideration if you use a lot of tires on a budget).

I also have found that good quality tires for 16" wheels really do not have too much roll over onto the sidewalls either, so that is a dead issue for me.
