H&R Coilovers or Springs/Konis better?

I'm trying to decide which would be a better setup for a daily driven but weekend competed autocross car. I don't really have the money at present to drop ~2k on a coilover system. The H&R coilovers seem like a good compromise in that they are only about 1k and ride height adjustable so the car can be corner balanced but it does not offer dampening adjustment. The Koni/H-sport spring setup would allow dampening adjustment but not corner balancing. I'd really like a nice set of adjustable coilovers like PSS9s but they are so much more expensive than the H&Rs and at present I've got the money for H&Rs but not Bilsteins. Should I just bite the bullet and save up for the PSS9 kit or can the H&R coilover kit be made to work well? I figure with so many other adjustments possible (I've already got the h-sport comp rear swaybar and will be getting camber plates and adjustable rear control arms) the dampening adjustment may not be so integral. Any input would be great.

Thanks.

Having just recently installed PSS9's I learned that H&R apparently makes the springs for Bilstein, which means Bilstein Coilovers = H&R Coilovers. So, save your $ & go with the H&R's. Same thing, but for less $. Just my .02 cents.

Thanks, yeah I think H&R coilovers have bilstein shocks, I hadn't heard about Bilstein coilovers using H&R springs but hey, that makes them even more comparable. The main difference is that the PSS9 has 9 adjustments for bound/rebound whereas the H&R aren't adjustable.

At the moment I think I'm goig to get the H&Rs unless somebody comes up with some pretty good reasons to go another route.

Kyle,

The 9 way adjustability of the PSS9's was the reason I chose them over the H&R's. Personally, I like being able to go from teeth rattling/bone jarring firm to full soft. A friend of mine has them on his M3 and I had a chance to try them on a couple different settings before buying them for my MINI.

If you're interested and decide you still want PSS9's I say go for it, but I'd suggest you try www.shockwarehouse.com which is where I got mine for $1,627.51 + S&H.

You can link to their site directly from Bilstein. But don't look for the PSS9's under MINI, you'll have to look under BMW.

Good luck and Enjoy!

Kyle,

if you are in atlanta, give dan law a call. he is a suspension expert and in your area... he has set up tons of pro team race cars as well as hundreds of privateer race/track cars. he can tell you which way you want to go... even if its for autocross...

h&r doesn't have a very good reputation in terms of quality of hardware and it doesn't have proper adjustability. pss9 adjustments are "paired"... can't do individual changes. not sure exactly what you need for autox, but big track is alot more demanding and for the m3's ground-control (koni and eibach) is by far the best, followed by the tckline setup (koni and vvs).

dan law can be reached at 770-631-6779 or de_law@bellsouth.net. tell him that i sent you (hayaku from the bmw m3 world)

fwiw...
