Homestead-Miami

Southern Florida was hit by hurricane Charley and while it was recovering along cam hurricane Frances. Frances hit hard and created a lot of damage. While it didn't damage the Homestead-Miami Speedway, it did knock out power in almost every county in Florida, then proceeded north up the east coast causing major flooding and damage all along its path. Just a week after Frances, along comes Hurricane Ivan. So, Grand Am rightfully decided to postpone the race one week.

The race is scheduled for September 18-19 and is now a two-day event instead of three days. We will move our rigs in on Friday afternoon. Saturday will feature al the Grand Am Cup events, tech inspection, practice and race. Qualifying is being eliminated due to the shortness of time. So we will line up for our race positions by team points standing as per the rulebook.

I have to say I'm not very happy about this. During our last visit to this track in March of this year, we shattered the track record by three seconds on our way to winning the pole position for the Grand Am Cup Series Race. We'll just have to work a little harder to get to the front. The MINI's will do well at this track and it looks like it will be a wet weekend so the MINI's will have an added advantage.

Our driver lineup has changed a little due to a conflict with the new date. Driving the #20 car will be Lead Driver Shane Lewis, Jupiter Fl and Team Owner Tony Nuzzo, Glen Head, NY. The #21 car will feature Gene Sigal, Los Angeles, Ca and Tim Gaffney Detroit, Mi. Tim has a good deal of experienced racing front wheel drive racecars, and won the ST1 Class race in 2003 in a fwd car. Gene drives a Porsche in the Rolex series and will have double duty this weekend. While close the MINI just doesn't have the power the Porsche has, but then again the Porsche doesn't have quite the fun factor the MINI has.

Given the less than desirable starting order, we got a very respectable 8th place class finish. Something tells me that if there would have been qualifying for this event, and if we would have placed well (I think very likely given the previous success there), there would be cause for celebration. This track seems to be a good one for the MINI. I was actually quite impressed that she did so well in those 100+ degree temps!!! Those RX8's, and in their first year, are proving to be quite a package though...

Tony, we're behind you guys. Keep those chins up, and get back after it...

 

Well Done - you guys were certainly moving up fast, especially during the 1st 1/2 hour where it looked as though you were solidly in mid-field.
