...a few years and I have a MINI again!..tranny question

ok all, been a LONG time, but I got a MINI again last week.

R50
2002
Pure Silver

have a tranny question. Some mechanics tell me this is normal, because i have "flat gears" but I dont think so.

When accelerating slowly or under let say 4k i get this whine that seems matched with the acceleration. it goes away when i shift and once the engine gets all throaty, it dissapears.

its hard to explain.

so, does the tranny on the 2002 R50's have a whine? I'm thinking of checking the tranny fluid

Stick, 5 speed midlands I assume?

Mine made a whine when under load and even under deceleration eventually. It got progressively loader over ~500 miles, to the point where I couldn't drown it out with the Borla exhaust and the radio blasting on the highway. I thought it was a throwout bearing, but it wasn't. The entire tranny was replaced under a 3rd party extended warranty.

How long has this been happening? Miles?

When the tech checked my fill plug he said the magnet was covered in metal shavings.

The 2002 midlands was known for being pretty poor relilibility wise....
It is possible it was rebuilt with stright cut gears...a company was offering a kit..said it made the car kinda loud....
But i kinda doubt there are many of these around.....
Later midlands got quite a bit better by most accounts, but mini eventually switched to a different 5 speed maker in2005 (i think). But it is cheaper to fix than the horrid cvt!!

I have had the car about a week. about 300 miles put on it so far. the car says its at 99k. the engine seems to roar/purr nicely around 4k and above. it seems pretty loud, which is nicer than the whine. seems like stock mufflers too.

any local peeps around to take a look at it?

ok. did trans flush today.
whine went away. shifts better.

however....

I DID notice that the whine comes back ONLY when the A/C is on. perhaps its a engine noise? can anyone else duplicate this noise? AC on, under power...
