A car can have a name and you don't release you have done it. My first car i ever drove 67 El Comino big block with no windscreen, no seats, no doors it was called "the beast" (ps my dad owned a salvage lot and i was 13) My 93 Pontiac sunfire with cracked exhaust manifold was called "Doo-Doo ". My blue 200sx sentra was lovingly referred to by me as "My little boy". All cars have names

My Mini's name came to me kind of as a revelation a few days after I brought him home. His name is Tug. The picture explains why.

Ive on occassion called my vehicles a piece of cr@$ while working on them.
Does that count?
I guess I see cars (as much as I enjoy them) as just that. Cars.
It's not a pet, or a family member, so I just don't see a need to name them.
Hell I have a fish tank with a few fish and they dont have names either.
Now the day that my car will come to me on comand when I call it, then I'll come up with a name. until then I kinda find the whole thing childish. (sorry) just the way I feel.

I like that. The song and the name for the GP.

[quote=howsoonisnow1985;1987029]"Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand.
Just like a river twisting through a dusty land.
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio Rio dances across the Rio Grande.
Hey now, look at that. Did they really chase you down?
At the end of the drive, the lawmen arrive, it makes me feel
alive alive alive"
Yes, its Duran Duran's "Rio", never really listend to lyrics, but kinda appropriate I'd say. Truth is I love this genre (post punk, new wave, new romantics) of music, but never really a fan of DD other than the song "Planet Earth" and their rated X music videos, but it was an appropraite name for GP0019-her name is RIO.

I shouldn't have read this thread while in the process of configuring my 1st MINI. I have 'cart before the horse' syndrome and find myself thinking of names and then trying to picture what that version would look like.

Do I want a Weasly? a Fozziewigg? a Bruce Wayne? a Snape? a Fuggles?

Deep clensing breaths...clear the mind....

I had allways thought naming your auto was kind of silly. SO when I saw that so many folks were doing here on NAM, I went with a silly name. Now, back to the question, where did the name come from. It's a contestants name from a Japanese dubbed tv show broadcast on Spike TV.

I don't think that's silly at all. In fact, I think it shows good taste. Or at least, it tastes good.

I named my first MINI (2002) "Cherry"....which was quite boring...but when I got my second MINI (2005 S) I called her "Sophie" because she looks as beautiful as Sophie Marceux (French Actress)

Naming our Mini Cooper S

First time we named a car also. Wanted something British but American too. Decided on L'BEN, after Big Ben the British clock. 2nd choice was QUIDS, cause it took a lot of quids to buy it. njp

Ms. Brahms... voted on by members of DC Metro Minis and named after the character played by Wendy Richards on "Are you being served ?" .... Both cheeky in a nice sort of way

My 04 PS/B JCW was Pedro. I knew it when I saw him, just popped out. His theme song was Selena's El Toro Relajo. Easily one of the best songs to listen to when driving Mulholland.
07 AB/W MCS is Geronimo. Doesn't have a theme song... yet.

Our new baby is named after Daphne from Frasier... pretty, British, kinda wacky! We also have the dark blue mini-van, Stevie Ray Van, and my old Ford Escort ZX2, Stuart Little White Car.

Never named a car before. But mine is Grape Ape after the cartoon. I call the nav system in GB English "Vanessa". I love the English accent and the use of "Motorway"

Tristan!

The long version of how it came about:

It was kinda weird because I was laying in bed thinking about my MINI (about all I think about these days) and was about to fall asleep when the name Tristan came to me. I don't know from where, but I do remember thinking "if I still remember it in the morning then my MINI's name will be Tristan." I was feeling kinda silly since I've never named a car before. I told my DH the name and he said he didn't know a Tristan, and couldn't think where it came from either. Days went by with me still wondering how I came to that name.

Then the funky part....The name of the ship that Tristan is on....the Isolde (and I honestly can't say if I knew this before I came up with the name or not, because I don't remember what day I thought of the name and what day I found out the name of the ship - heck, Tristan didn't finish production until the 14th and loaded on the 21st and I've known the name for a while now.)

So, the big question for those who've read this far....does anyone see the connection? It took me days to see it. There is an opera by Richard Wagner from the 1800s called "Tristan and Isolde" (made into a movie not too long ago - though I've not seen either). So I think the name is perfect, and Tristan will have a nice romance aboard the Isolde during his cruise, too. I'll bet!

Lizzie.

Wanted a good British sounding name and a friend came up with Elizabeth. But that seemed too formal, so it was shortened to Lizzie.

Oops. Sorry MiniRee. I just noticed you are the to be owner of the vehicle formerly known as Beezus. Anyway, here are my candidates for names:

11) ELEVEN - As in "This one goes to 11."

10) Stella - no real MINI connection, we just love to shout this name at the top of our lungs!

9) Fraulein Sassafras - my wife's dubious childhood dog, a dachshund, named by my Spanish speaking mother-in-law

8) Little Wing - one of our favorite songs with a minor British connection

7) Honey Pie - Beatles song; matches paint and leather

6) Eleanor - The Turtles, not the Beatles this time; "Eleanor gee I think you're swell, you're my pride and joy etcetera!"

5) Julia - Beatles song, lovely

4) Mina - from Bram Stoker's Dracula

3) Keeley Hazel - British Page 3 girl; notion rejected by wife as unfit for a family car (Hey I just thought topless -convertible, oh never mind!)

2) Honey Ryder - the Ursula Andress character from Ian Fleming's (James Bond) Dr. No. This was my front runner but my wife and daughter are less keen on it that the current front runner...

1) Sugar Magnolia - "She's got everything delightful, she's got everything I need ...She's a summer love for spring, fall and winter. she can make happy any man alive...Sometimes when the night is dying, I take me out and I wander around, I wander
round.

I named mine "Daisy". Only reason was because I bought it at the Daisy Hill Mini Dealer and hence had "Daisy Hill" on the number plate surroundings. It grew on me.

Has anyone ever compiled a list of car names of NAM members? It might be useful to inspire new names and avoid duplications.

A possibility that came up after we named Daphne was Truly Scrumptious from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I think that goes well with the sparkling silver color!

Name

We named our Mini "Nigel" and we pronounce it with a very deep English accent: "Noi-jel." Just thought it was the perfect name for a car from Oxford England.

My LY/B Cooper was Ollie, for Oliver Hardy of Laurel & Hardy. He was English & kept landing me in one fine mess after another.

IB/W MCS was Ollie, Jr.

GP became Stanley as a natural progression
