Tires/Wheels :: Build a 17.4lbs spare tire for 74.00
ok ok, so there's a few threads here on NAM that talk about how you can use a chevy colbalt spare that is 4x100; however, nobody has confirmed what year chevy colbalt it comes in, nor if the hub centric ring will fit with the mini. There is also a thread on here mentioning that a honda civic spare will fit the mini, but again no one can confirm the hub centric ring nor the year civic.
Furthermore, do you really want to shop all day looking through junk yards which will charge a good amount.
On top of that I am seeing some chevy colbalt spare wheel / tire combo's for 99.00 right now on ebay.
What is your other option if you don't try to somehow make the above work? Well you can order one from newminimania for 259.00 or just build you own.
Super easy.
1. Call up Classic MINI in Ohio - they give 20%-25% discount to NAM members
800-388-1098. The current price I paid for the spare rim was 39.00 (shipped)as of 7/15/10.
Part # 36-11-1-509-164
2. Order the spare tire part from tirerack. This is the tough part. I had to call 3 different times to finally find the dude that wouldn't keep quoting me 115/70/15 tires that were 100.00 or more. Seriously the first 3 guys were like "i have this goodyear for 109.00, I have a conti for 102.00". it's like dude give it up, i don't want to pay 100 for a doughnut. Finally I talked to a dude and boom his first answer was like I have this Kumho for 35.00.
Their part number on the invoice = 17D5KH Then below that was these numbers 50013543. Description says "t115/70D15 KU Kh Spare 5001343 90L"
T115/70D -15 Kumho KH
$35.00Shipping would probably be 10 bucks but free if you are a repeat customer on something this size. You just have to ask.
I really wish cobalt spares were verified as the correct hub ring and were easy to get, but if you don't feel like hunting junk yards and ebay for the right deal, this is about the best alternative. Insane that mini mania sells the same thing for 259.00
I guess you might factor in another 10 bucks to get it mounted, but I am lucky my friend owns a tire mounting machine.
BTW I have a cooper S r56 and yes I do understand that I can only run this spare on the back wheels, so if i get a flat up front i will have to move my rear tire to the front and put this spare on the back. That's the price you have to pay to not run those lame Run flats.

Great info! Especially sources and part numbers!!!!
BTW, I had great success in the junkyard with a 2001 KIA SEPHIA 15" donut. Perfect center bore, bolt pattern - and the same 115/70 R15 Kuhmo tire you listed above. Only paid $20! It doesn't clear the front brakes though Also, pick up 4 VW wheel bolts as the Mini ones were a hair too long for the KIA spare.
