Sorry Larry, I didn't see this thread until you bumped it.
This is where I plumbed the sender for my AutoMeter electric water temp gauge...
...it's a custom aluminum tee that I machined to replace the stock plastic one. While it may not be the best place, it was easy to get to and install.
This location has proven to be very accurate until about 200 degrees when compared with the reading on my ScanGaugeII. After that, it reads about 10 degrees high.
The ideal place would be next to the factory sender in the head, if there's room to drill and tap. Phil aka Greatbear has his at the back of the block where the block drain is, and has reported it to be quite accurate.
Do not create a tee using the stock sender location, as it will provide false readings to the ECU and a SES light.

I like mechanical gauges myself, for water temp gauge (autometer mechanical) #4331-6 (for 6' lead) i used Autometer 2282 radiator hose adapter.Basicly you just cut your rad hose (upper in my case) into, insert the adapter inline, secure with clamps supplied, and screw the probe from the gauge into the port on the adapter, other than checking and topping up the coolant, you're good to go. The adapter sells for about $22.00,depending on where you buy. DAN@GRASSROOTSGARAGE.COM Turned me on to this set up.

Go to www.autometer.com in the search box, type ''2282'' and search, open the ''rad adapter'' file and view. You will see the adapter where the probe screws in,now you just need the gauge 4331-6 to install in a pod and hook up light.
