1. The door panels came off. Then I took the other pieces off not knowing that the little black factory rivets were going to be that big of a pain. I had the pieces painted then with a little help from Plastic Gorilla Glue it all came back together rather nice.
2. The downtubes and the cup holder and the ashtray lid I painted myself. I figured what the heck, its black can I mess it up.
3. The steering wheel I took off and sent the 3 spokes to be painted.
The Multifunction buttons I sent off to myminiparts.com to be wrapped in leather to match the steering wheel. When they got back I had to cut most of the leather off the sides to put the buttons back into the steering wheel. (If I would have known earlier how big of a problem that was, I probably would have painted them instead).
All in all I am pretty pleased with the result tho.

Great job on painting your interior.
Any ideas for yellow leather two tone upholstery (yellow with black trim or piping? or opposite colors).
Just for the curious I'll post a picture of my dash done in 2003 (15 dash pieces removed and custom airbrushed a wood finish).
When driving it's so much fun having a custom dash.

Dude, that is AWESOME! I was planning to do my interior in Chilli Red (got Charlie a month before it became an option in 05) and had trouble picturing everything all together. Don't think I'd do the speaker grills or the pull-bars on the doors though. A bit too much red for me. Looks good in yellow though.
Love the emblem on the dash. Nice touch.

This applies to 5 piece dash.
If you purchase the MINI dash pieces first you can study them to see where the fasteners are. Each is held into place with a few pressure tabs and a few screws, about 2 to 4 each.
Here are some instructions:
------------
The front/top part of the dash comes off really easy. Pop off the end pieces on each side of the dash that are exposed when you open the door. Then remove the two torx bits on each side. The top/front of the dash can now be removed, giving you access to remove the dash trim.
As for the down tubes, remove the two torx bits on each side, then remove the screw in the cupholders. Pop up the cup holder piece that anchors the down tubes. The dash piece under the steering wheel (not sure how this will work with the parcel shelf) should be removed and the glove box opened. You should now be able to wiggle out the downtubes.
---------------
I would take off the top of the dash first as noted. Open the doors and look at the vertical side panels and remove the few screws. Pry sidewides the verical panels and this allows removal of the top of the dash. Now you have access to the screws from the top of the 5 dash pieces while you can get to the screws from the bottom of the pieces from under the dash.
Start with the airbag piece or the steering wheel piece since they hold in the two side or end pieces. The steering wheel piece is eash with screws from below. The airbag piece has screws from below and from above and has a metal bar with two screws that needs to be taken off from the dash slightly above the dash piece.
There is a cloth that wraps around the metal to deploy the airbag so this metal needs to be loosened to get the dash piece off. Later put it all back together again. You won't trigger the airbag. Once the two inner pieces are removed then the two end pieces are easy. Few screws on the bottom and pull hard to get the pieces out.
The center piece has more screws, two on the top under the plastic lip and more on the front and some from below. The air vents don't need to be removed they come off as one piece. There are about 4 push tabs so yank hard once all the screws are out.
Hope this helps. I removed 15 dash pieces when I painted my dash.
Paint the doors too while you are at it. You can also cover parts with cloth or leather. Be creative.

jst4fun: Well done on the interior. Looks like we have similar tastes...my interior is almost identical to yours, albeit Jet Black and ChiliRed. Very nice job!
Does this help you imagine :

Thats about perfect. Another thought I had was doing a checkerboard dash (to match my JCW floormats), getting the checkerboard rearview cover but doing everything else in Chili Red like you have it. Probably including the downpipes too.
But seriously though, sweet looking interior.
