Interior/Exterior Who has changed seats?
#1
I am seriously considering going to an aftermarket driver's side seat - my MC currently has the "regular" seats, and I really want something that bolsters me in. I know I'd lose the airbag and heated seat function - what I'm more interested in is what seat offers the most room for people who, shall we say used to buy clothes labeled as "husky", had to wear Toughskins instead of Levi's. Yeah, I can stand to lose a few pounds, but I know not all aftermarket seats are created equal. I'm looking for someone who's done it, and their opinions on room as compared to the OEM sport seats found on the MCS or MC.

danp,
We installed the Corbeau TRS seats in the TEAM MCO car. In speaking with Brett at SoloRacer.com and he mentioned that there is a model of the TRS that has a wider seat bottom and back. You may want to give him a call. I like the seats the seats alot and they are VERY cost effective. Like your car we have pulled the heated sport seats to install this model. I've also listed details on how to bypass the seat airbags HERE. This is really the only semi-difficult part of the seat replacement as its just a pain to collect all the parts. Once you have everything it goes pretty quickly.

hey Mark,
Thanks for the heads up on the Corbeau TRS, they seem to be a better choice than the A4's...not that I plan on going beyond a 40" waist anytime soon
My wife may kill me because she likes the heated seats...oh well. I find myself being tossed about way too often in everday driving...everyday driving in the MINI being what we call "spirited"

Say, while we are on the subject of seats, I have a different questions. Does anyone know if the seats in a 2002 Cooper S are the exact same seats that are in a 2003 Cooper S?
Katzkin, the automotive upholstery company makes a great replacement cover for the Cooper S 2003 that allows you to have a two tone seat cover. In may case I want red and black, the samway the blue and black seats are available for the Mini now.
Unfortunately Katzkin doesn't list this product for the 2002 Cooper S, so if the 2002 S seats are the same I could do it that way, anybody know for sure?
I will also call 1-800-ask-mini on monday.

Wouldn't it be nice if Recaro made a Mini fitment with the side air bag like they do for VW? Perhaps we would need a petition to get their interest? Recaro do offer more choice with adjustments and heating but are expensive.
Also does anyone know if the Cobra seat mechanism works with Recaro's?
Cheers

Recaro was taking a dim view on selling replacement seats with airbags in the US. Recaro didn't want to be bothered with the legal issues of an airbad not going off.
This might be changing however because the 25th Anniversary VW GTI comes with Recaro seats with side airbags. Actually you might be able to order this seat at a VW dealership and change the seat mounts to work in the Mini.
Expect to pay betwween $1,500 and $2,000 for a seat.

Actually the local Recaro dealer in Sydney (also in the UK) can get the VW seats. The issue about the electrical circuitry might need some investigation however...
But Recaro have yet to make a seat bracket, therefore my question about Cobra. I think RSpeed also has a universal bracket mount but without sliders. It would add up...
Still, Recaro's may not be cheap but they do make great seats and it looks like they may have a ready market with Mini owners if they come to the party...
Cheers,
