R56 Joey Mod

I don't remember if I posted these before or not. Back in September, I took the leap and used the .pdf file that's posted a couple of posts before this. After reading about the concerns with paint bubbling, I opted to use Hi-Temp header paint and I went with a flat black as my plain was/is to black out all of the exterior chrome with matte or flat black.

Since September, I've used the headlights nearly every day, at times, for hours and I'm not having any issues with paint bubbling, flaking or anything else.

I do have Xenon's and I hear they generate less heat but I've read several posts that suggest the Xenon ballast module gets pretty darn hot too.

The last part I'd like to do is to get rid of the yellow bulbs in the turn signals and replace them with a set of the silver bulbs that flash yellow.

Yes, I was rather nervous about putting those very expensive headlights in the oven but I followed the directions in the "how-to" listed in this forum and everything worked like a champ. I did try the heatgun method first but the only thing I accomplished was a couple of blisters on my fingers and frustration. When the assemblies came out of the oven, they were ready to come apart with minimal effort. Putting them back together was just as easy.

The end result is unique and it looks really, really good!

I used a regular high temp black gloss paint and a plastic primer with mine after sanding the crome down. just be sure to use some kind of cleaner on the sanded area's. Also be sure to allow them to dry in a warmer area before putting them back together. I have to take mine apart again to clean off the lens. Not to sure if it might be from the pain vapor. I was sure not to touch the inside of the lens. a little extra sealant might be a good idea as well when putting them back together.

I used plastic primer after sanding, heat dry with gun, then high temp flat black (rustoleum I think). Did several coats and used the heat gun after each application.

Finally finished...and everything went back together and works! Phew...

To whoever said this is "fun" to do....I have no idea what you're smoking, but I'd love some of it. While nothing is terribly hard about it, many things can go wrong and it's nerve wracking, and takes forever. But as everyone has said, the results ARE worth it. I used Rustoleum Plastic primer, and then about 3 coats Rustoleum High Temp Black paint.

Yeah, I never said it was easy and you've got to have pretty good nerves for it too! Took me 5 hours 'cause I took my time and, like one of the previous posts, I used a heat gun between coats to help cure the paint.

The results are worth it for sure.

I like the way you've left the chrome around the grill and the washers and even the touch of chrome inside the headlight. I blacked out ALL of that so it's a different look.

Ain't this fun!

...looks like this may be my next mod. I thought installing gauges was going to be a pain in the butt, yet they turned out to be much easier than I built it up (in my head) to be, -hopefully this will be the same. I've been putting this mod off for quite some time, don't like the idea of putting my lights in the oven.

It's not the easiest MOD in the world. I think we people just make it out to be hard and like to scare people. It took me about 4 hours and everthing came out fine. Just don't take waht everyone on here says to heart and jump at this MOD it's well worth it.

I'm going to reopen my lenses in the next few days to clean out the dust I left in there, and I'm thinking of changing the color. My car is AB/AB, and color suggestions?? I was thinking either a subtle dark silver, or orange, and then some orange mirror caps, with an orange beltline. What do you guys think??

I think red goes better with AB than orange...

Yeah I was thinking about that too. I think I'm just going to stick with silver and see how it looks.

...so I am going to do this in the next week or so, ...I have clear bra on my car, and they put it on my headlights as well. Will 5min's in the oven at 250 damage the clear bra on my headlights? -anyone w/ clear bra on their headlights put theirs in the oven?

I vary a bit from the norm on these. I only heated mine to roughly 150-175. Didn't have any issues on the one set with the clear protection on it. But I see your concern. Might be worth ringing the mfr. or the installer to find out the operating range.

Good luck! BTW: even if you have to redo the 3m, it is worth it for the Joey look!

Adam, your totaly right, I am going to do it regardless. I love the look more than I care about some nick's on my headlights. I believe I remember the installer saying 180 was the magic number to remove the clear bra. (yet will verify w/ him).

How long do you cook your lights at the 150-175?

(by the way, loving my gauges i got from Alta).

Don't think the oven will hurt the lens overlays because they get baked in the sun pretty good.

So does anyone make the part black already for the light for those of us who don't like bubbles /peeling?

I not a fan of spray paint and would rather pay a few bucks to have it looking perfect.

I just want the black part , do you know of anyone who sells just that?

I don't see the need in repuchasing the light housings when I have them already , plus they are crazy expensive.

I thought one of these companies who sells mods would see that there is a market for this item.

If there was an option to buy those parts I would but there is no vendor that just sells those parts. You will have to paint or buy the full housing with the black parts.
