The projector "shroud" as it is called is held on by two small tabs at 9:00 and 3:00, which can be reached from behind the projector. Push each tab in one at a time and wiggle the shroud off carefully. When you fully remove it you will see a small Phillips head screw holding the clear section of the shroud. Unscrew this screw and. Remove the clear section before painting.

attempted this 2 days ago but i broke some clips on the Right headlight inner housing... good thing my headlight is a standard R56 reflector housing, so i sourced one on a local wrecker for basically nothing. Cant imagine how much i'd be out if i had the xenon projector lamp...

my joey mod

Heres mine. I did the joey mod and I swapped out the projector lens for a clear one and modded the projector to make more color at the cut off. Pictures dont do it justice though

What lens did you use? I went with a ZKW-R (value) from TRS and it fit perfectly. My cutoff is razor sharp, even with the stock shield. Did you back out the shield adjustment screw and bend/remove the RV shield? Your cutoff doesn't look as sharp as it should be with a clear lens.

I got the same lens as you did. I think its just the pictures. The passenger side is very sharp but I couldnt erver get the driver side to match. But I adjusted that screw alittle and put spacers on the bottom 2 screws of thr lens mount.

This looks pretty cool. I actually need a set of the halogen headlight orange turn signal lenses for my R56. If anyone has a pair for sell, please send me a pm!

For those still considering the "Joey Mod".....DO IT!
I had my MINI for more than 4 years and 120,000 miles AFTER painting my "standard" headlights - without issue.

Condensed instructions:
oven at 200 - 250* F for 5 minutes
Krylon Satin Black without scuffing the surface, just a good cleaning with acetone.

I am having trouble getting the lower outside bolts off, it seems the metal housing they screw into are spinning. Any suggestions on how to get it out? I am about the just Dremel the damn thing!

WARNING....
I helped a friend do his 2013 with halogen lights last week and found that acetone REMOVED the chrome plating from the plastic rings that attach to the clear lenses. This was just a quick wipe to prep the surface for paint. It wasn't an issue as they were being painted anyway, but don't wipe the reflector areas!
Also, he used a no-name blue tape instead of 3M...it left a residue on the reflectors. It proved very difficult to remove as we were so afraid of damaging the chrome.
Use 3M tape and good luck!

If you don't think it's within your comfort zone, then yes, get someone else to do it.
It really isn't difficult, though. Just read the entire thread and take notes.

So today I attempted the mod via the heat gun method. Turns out I don't have the patience and ended up scrapping the project for now.

The oven method looks way simpler. Are the electronics easy to remove on a Xenon?

I've had my 08 MCS for 3 weeks and I saw the "Joey" mod sniping the pages. I had to do it and I like the results. I've already blacked out most everything else so this was only natural. Also smoked the amber plastic and all reflectors while I was at it.

That is just the cover that is over the bulb. I had seen others paint it black so I figured I would see about painting blue to match. It turned out better than expected. Do the mod you won't regret it. I just jump right into projects. There are great tutorials on this thread that walk thru step by step.

I personally did 215 degrees for about 5-6 minutes and it came right apart. I also highly recommend getting real automotive tape for the masking. Masking off the reflective part was by far the most frustrating part for a not so patient person.

Over all I think it looks good, plus tinting all the other lights around the car ties it all together. So don't wait any longer, jump in feet first. Worst case you ruin a light and you have to buy a new one .
