I was wondering if there was any kind of box that will fill up the boot to be level with the folded back seats. I keep my climbing shoes in the car all the time and have to move them around when I have other stuff to store. It would also be nice to have a box that contained the odor.

I agree...it'd be good for someone to develop this...something really sturdy, so if you have to put a TV (...or some other heavy thing) on top of it there'd be no problem. I'd like to keep cleaning stuff, dusters, windshield sunscreen, tools...stuff like that in it. I'd have to be easy to open from the top, too.

I have basically solved this problem. I built a raised floor (not really a box) to the height of the folded rear seat. The only thing I need is to find similar carpet to tack on it for the match. I can still store things underneth, such as books, shoes and smaller items like that and the bigger ones on top. It can be removed easily just by lifting out. Now I don't think it can contain any oder though. BTW, I just built it out of plywood, took me 20 minutes.

Go to Texas Saddlebags....http://www.saddlebags.com./

Select Cargo Floors. These are hard plastic storage units with carpeted covers, exceptionally sturdy. One will fit perfectly in the boot opening width/length (with CD changer installed. Can't remember the size, but use the inside measurements of boot storage for a match to their product. I bought 2, they fit on top of each other. The height is even with back seat down and top of CD changer. Also bought a rubber mat to fit completely across folded seats and saddle bags,.

What is missing for the boot is a complete floor unit that also covers the back of seats. .

I like Miniac's cargo board though. That is a classy solution....

Another option: Buy some sturdy fiberboard or maybe even plexiglass, a couple of hinges, and design your own box just big enough for the little boot area where the floor is lower.

My concern is weight. Yeah, I could build one (...maybe not as nice as y'alls) using conventional materials but it would be too heavy. That's what I'm thinking for now anyway. The gears are turnin', though.

My cargo board (basically a 3/8" thick 4'x'4 piece of plywood covered with indoor/outdoor carpet) is heavy, but it's only in the car when I have to haul something ... when utility not weight is most important

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Looks like you have some nice tie-downs, too. You need something with some strength for that. Mine would pretty much be in my MINI all the time, I think.

Sounds like the route suggested by emagineer is the way for you to go

I think Cocomats makes a rear cargo mat for the MINI which covers the folded down seat backs and boot area. An alternative to the rubber mat ... albeit a pricey one.

Thanks, Miniac. The beer guys might be better off with your setup, though!!!

I think you can turn the MINI boot organizer upside down for a similiar effect.

I started on this project last evening using 1/4" fiberboard to make a grid base and then 1/4" fiberboard to cover. It seems to be working out well. I'll post some pics as I get it done.
