Interior/Exterior cars with tinted windows....
#1
i got my windows tinted a few days ago and noticed that two pieces of tint was used for the back one. it's showing a line in between the two. i talked to the installer about it and he said that the rear glass has to much of a curve that he had to do it that way. he has done a few MINIs and assured me that all of them are the same as mine. anyone else has the same problem? specifically those in the chicago area that have theirs done at MIDWEST glass tinters on LAKE and 25th ave. in MELROSE PARK. i need a quick response fellow miniacs. thanks in advance!!

some places use 2 or 3 pieces because of the curvature of the glass.
the window on my other car was done in 3 pieces with the edges lining up on defroster lines so it's not really noticible.
the guy that did my mini used a heat gun to shrink and shape the single piece which i think is the way to go.

thanks a lot everyone!! i did tell him that i read all the post about the tinting and no mention of the two pieces but he kept insisting its the way to go and that hes been tinting windows for over 20 years and that he knows what hes talking about. this blows!! trying to get things done!! and what do you get? hassles. now im afraid that if i give him **** and have him redo the window he might take it out on my baby

You have a point there. When I read about using a blow dryer to shrink and custom fit the one piece to the MINI. and your guy saying it can't be done. sounds like he doesn't custom fit anything. Somehow I think that if you make him redo it he won't go to that trouble, it will look bad and then he'll say "see I told you it can't be done"...

a tip after hanging out most of the day with the guy that tinted my windows (thanks, lee!):
wet tint won't stick a lot of the time to the little bumps that run around the edge of our 3 rear-most windows. give the tint about a week to dry then run your finger along that edge and you'll find that it sticks to the glass and gives a cleaner look.
oh, and he mentioned something about different types of tinting material. the stuff he uses is designed to shrink and shape with heat. another kind from the same manufacturer (madico) is about half the price and not as workable - it just gets gooey or something under heat.

I just got home from the tint shop, and I got 1 piece done on the back window. I've heard about the supposed curve problem, but my tint guy said it'll be no problem. Other threads i've read out there said that our front window is too curvy for tint as well, but my tint guy said no problem to that too. I'm even getting my taillights tinted next weekend.
Go back to shop #1, get a refund...go to a more qualified shop, have them remove it (I wouldn't trust the first shop to remove it since they don't sound qualified), then have the qualified shop put one piece of tint on the back.
Sorry you had such bad experience, good luck with your next tint job!
