Interior/Exterior Joey-Mod ver. I can't believe I actually did it!!

Just remember before doing the Joey-mods:
The first gen is a PAIN IN THE ***! The 2nd gen is easy... This is due to the different glue used. I've done both. The 1st gen took an hour + per light just to get them open. The 2nd gen (facelift) took 5 minutes, and I could have done it without even using a stove if I wanted.

i tried to do it yesterday but the glue seem like it won't come out no matter what. i was afraid that i will melt the actual light so i stop.
and you're right.... R56 are lots easier

well actually to clarify some things..
02-04's are apparently very hard to take apart the headlights and require a lot more work...compared to..the
05-06's..which are wayy easier..
i took mine apart using a heat gun..(i tint windows so its something i use all the time) and just started heating up where the silicone was..
and eventually started prying at it..this is actually indeed an old thread tho..
just pull hard and it should slowly but surely come apart..that is..if you have the 05-06 headlights..

As for me and my '06. I really want to do a joey mod, it just scares the crap out of me. So if all of you guys that have done it wouldn't mind giving me some pointers, they would be much appreciated.
I just have regular non-xenon lights.
So take the lights out, do the rings come off before the lights get taken out, or after?
Take the bulbs out.
I like the sound of using a heat gun or hair drier a lot more than throwing them in the oven.
Start prying at the lens until it pops.
Take the parts I want to paint out and paint it. (what kind of paint, primer, etc?)
Scrape off the rest of the sealant. Re-apply new silicone. (any particular kind. Loctite perhaps?)
Put lens back on.
Let dry.
Yadda yadda...
Details will be great!
Thanks
Also any pictures of the procedure would be great too.

What is a good sealant (silicone?) I could use to re-seal the lamps that would allow me to re-heat and open them again later, if need be? I have a project planned (not Joey mod) that involves popping the lamps open...but if something goes wrong down the road, I'll need to be able to get back in there...

I'd use silicone sealent ($5 a tube at any hardware store). Lay a thin line along the seam. The tube comes with a tip that you can cut to make a small hole - you don't need much goop, just enough to make a consistent, thin coating when the peices are pressed together. Wipe off any excess after assembly with a paper towel and then tape the halves together with masking tape - allow at least 12 hours to dry in a well-ventilated place.
Note that true silicone is very temperature resistant, and will make a VERY tight seal (they use it to make fish tanks, remember). If you want something that will soften with heat I'm not sure what to suggest. Maybe contact 3M direct? I know they have product specialists that can answer emails just for this reason.

The silver painted rings look really classy. Excellent job. I agree; on most cars, the black rings look a bit too heavy, like Tammy Fay Baker's mascara.

I have the earlier style lights, and used this thread as a guide. Basically it involves cutting them open with a dremel tool. It's pretty time consuming, but not really that difficult. I did it a while back, and it turned out great.

I have done both styles of lights, the 02-04 are MUCH harder to get apart. the adhesive they use is a tape, where as the 05-06 uses a type of silicone. You will have to use silicone on the earlier styles because the tape becomes practically useless. however, with the 05-06 you can reuse the original silicone. I didnt add any to mine. Just heat it back up again so that it will adhere to the lens better.
