modding the AC air vents?
I've seen pictures here and there of mods to the AC airvents.
anyone know how to either pop one out or get behind the aC air vents on dash?
I have a LCD touchscreen and the mount is the perfect size and shape to fit inside one of the AC vents on the dash, just like to mount it securely by removing the AC vent first.

this is 2nd version. first version, the first j hooks were too long, they stuck out too far making it look dangerous.
for the 2nd mount, i used shorter and thicker jhooks which hook better with less wobble. also, i splint the wood backing, so that i could insert the top and bottom peices separately. the wood is just a washer basically anyway.
so process-attach jhooks securely, keep a grip on them so they don't fall into ac vent, attach the bolts through lcd mount-or whatever-, add washers, start the nuts, then insert the wood backing, tighten.
nice stable mount, doesn't hurt the vents. is separateed from dash by about 1/6". allows use of hazard lights still.

just found out last weekend that it is easy as pie to run wires from the engine compartment through the ac vents. there is a plastic cover on the passenger side up under the windsheild wipers. remove it and you have full access to the ac vent system. I ran some 2 AWG wires through the main vent going to the passenger floor vent where there is a big cabin air filter. what an awesome little car this is for customizing.

That's actually a clever set-up, and I assume it's removable, yes. If it were me, I would have moved the hooks out a bit or used spacers of some kind so I could have fitted wing-nuts (tool-less removal that way). Nice. I might have to copy this one down the road, although I'd use a flat peice of plastic or brass, coated with rubber dip and fitted with high-strength Velcro - that way it could be used with either a flat-backed GPS or an iPod/MP3 player...
And yes, there's tins of space inside the dash for all kinds of wires. When I had my center panel out to replace the gauge faces, I drilled holes in the center vents and put LEDs in them, which glow from inside. Adds to my "all blue" LED cabin lighting in a subtle way. there was plenty of space all over the place for wires and tons of other stuff to zip-tie to.
