Interior/Exterior DIY CHECKERBOARD DASH
#4
The two dash pieces come out easy. The drivers side just pops out.The passenger side has two philips screws on the underside and it pops off.

I'd go check, but like you, I'm still waiting for my MINI to arrive... and unlike you, I don't have another one already sitting in my driveway

Well I got the driver's side swapped out--no problem. I expected that side to be more difficult than the passenger side. On that side, screws are out and 2/3 tabs unhooked, but that last tab doesn't seem to want to give. I know this shouldn't be difficult but if anyone has any advice before I try to finish it up tomorrow AM, I'd be grateful.

It is simple IF you realize you have to release all three tabs then pull "evenly" from the opposite side to clear the first set of tabs. Then tilt the trim piece up a little and slide it back so you can remove it from the two plastic guides on the other side (opposite the release tabs).

r56bb,
Read posts # 8 & 10 of this thread: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-trim-diy.html.
I put some duct tape over the head of a large flat screwdriver and pried the driver side piece up from the bottom once I had the steering wheel in the lowest position. As the post says, it really just pulls out once you give it a little pry. Then you can invert it to get it out past the tach, etc.
On the passenger side, post #10 pretty well covers it. The screws in mine were Torx-20, not Phillips head. Once you have the screws out, depress all three tabs, then pull "straight up" from the opposite side so the trim will clear the tabs. You're pulling just to get the trim edge over the tabs so you can clear them all. Once you do, tilt the trim back just a bit so it will slide off the plastic guides opposite the tabs--what is actually the top of the secret compartment when it's closed. Swap the old trim for the new by placing it over the guides, then snap it in place over the three tabs. Replace the Torx screws and you're good as new!
Hope this helps--Good luck with it!

I know this is an old post but I am getting the checkerboard dash soon and I have been trying to take off the old dash before my new one comes. I have been trying all day to do the passenger side and it will not budge. I feel like I am going to brake something.
If someone could take a picture of these tabs i need to depress. I also found the youtube video of the guy taking his whole dash part and it was sort of helpful but he didn't do the passenger side.
Thanks guys!! I cant wait to complete my checkerness to my car!!
